Fun Color Friday, Using MAC Russian Red Lipstick

I’m sorry I haven’t been very good as posting these regularly – it’s not that it’s not on my mind, but I am having a hard time getting good FOTD shots, particularly during the Winter when natural light, nevermind sunlight, is scarce to come by.  I’ve tried getting shots in the morning before work, but as I’m always running late, they’re hurried and unreflective of the look.  Once I get home from work, I have about 30 minutes to redo my makeup and get photos taken in the fading light, which is pretty much an impossible task.  However, I may have found a way that works for the time being – sticking my face directly in the bright light of my bathroom (lol!).  It’s the best I can do for now!

After being inspired by a few other bloggers, I decided to try out a bold red lip, which I absolutely adore but never seem to be able to pull off correctly.  After a bit of playing around, I think I found a way to rock a bright lip that doesn’t look too overdone or garish.  While I’ve always known that the key is to keep the rest of your makeup simple, I never seemed to get it right.  The reason, I’ve realized, is that ‘keeping it simple’ doesn’t mean wearing less makeup necessarily, it just means making it look flawless and subtle.  Check it out and let me know if I managed to be successful!Yikes, my brows are really crazy right now!  I need a maintenance wax, and I also need a new brow color – I’m too cheap to buy one at the moment so I’m using MAC’s Dark Edge as a filler, but I really prefer a pencil.  My apologies!

Without getting too detailed, what I’m wearing here for color is:

Urban Decay’s Perversion liquid liner
theBalm Mary Lou-Manizer (corner of eyes and under brow bone)
NARS The Multiple in South Beach (highlight)
theBalm’s Hot Mama shadow/blush
NYC Color Wheel Mosaic Face Powder in All-Over Bronze Glow (contour)
MAC Russian Red lipstick

Afterward, for fun I applied MAC’s Venetian Lustreglass on top of Russian Red (which is actually the original combo I bought) – I’d probably wear this if I were looking for an amped up look for going out:I actually really dislike Venetian on it’s own, but somehow have managed to use almost the entire tube by forcing myself to mix it with other shades.  THESE are the kinds of items I want to steer clear of from now on!

I hope these pictures properly showcase the look I was going for.  At least, from my perspective the colors are true to life, which is the best I can ask for at this point!  I’ll continue to work on my photography skills, and try to utilize good lighting when I can, to your benefit :)

Now – enjoy your weekends, my dears!  I hope it’s wonderfully relaxing, or awesomely spectacular – whatever you need!

Have you tried MAC’s iconic Russian Red?  How do you make it work?

    YOU DID IT! FOTD! :D :D :D

I swear, you can rock any look. The red lips look fab and I need to get on it. You know, Hourglass has a super creamy super red lipstick that I am terribly drawn to/frightened of? One day…!

Oh Liz, do it!! I think it would look awesome on you. Red lips definitely are scary though. I didn’t wear those lips out of the house – Russian Red is just a bit too much for me to handle just yet. But after doing that FOTD, and looking back at pics and figuring out how to wear it, I think I can attempt it again for the public to see ;) Like many things, just takes the right attitude, and also just getting used to it. Try it out and wear it around your house a few times, then – rock it out!!!!

Woohoo on the FOTD! I like it! :D The red lips are hot. You wear it like a natural! ;)

I don’t own Russian Red, but I have enough others that it doesn’t even matter, LOL. I’m not sure when/why I decided to own 203948203948 red lipsticks. ._.

Aw, thanks Larie! As someone who does a pretty darned good FOTD, I take that compliment very seriously. Thank you for saying so!

Lame, but I only have a handful of lipsticks, for whatever reason. But slowly I find I’m leaning more toward lipstick than gloss, so I think that’ll change soon. Not that I have a lot of glosses either LOL. But, I have too many eyeshadow so I gotta start buying something other than them haha!

Ooh man, I take that as a HUGE compliment Tracy, since you are in my mind, an expert when it comes to lip looks! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I’m really happy you liked it!

YES! You did it! Love your FOTD – you are beautiful my dear, and the red you chose is absolutely perfect with your skin tone and entire look! Kudos, my friend….now we’ll be expecting more – you do realize that, right?!

    • #8 by Latoya on February 20, 2012 - 11:11 pm

Yay!! Thank you Eugenia, for your kind words! I’m so pleased you liked the look! It’s scary to wear red, even scarier to post it for other beauty-minded people to see (more likely for critique!). I’m getting more comfortable taking photos now so you’ll likely see more, yes :) I’m still a novice, but as long as I feel the look is conveyed properly with the right colors, then I’ll just keep working on everything else!!

Your face is so pretty! Love the red lips, they’re bright and play well with the rest of your makeup.

Aw, thank you for saying such a nice thing, MM!! I’m really happy you like the red, and the whole look – I find it really tricky to pull bright lips off as a whole look, so I’m glad it seemed to work!
