Best Bang for Your Buck Series: Lipstick

Welcome to the ‘Best Bang for Your Buck‘ series!  Each week for the next few months, I’m going to tackle certain types of beauty products, and list the offerings from popular department store brands and their sizes vs. costs.  At a glance, you’ll be able to see which items are most cost effective in that category, and get a better idea if your money is being well spent, or if you’re being, well – a little ripped off!  Also, if you’re hedging on picking up a certain product because of the cost, this will give you an idea of the true value of the product and if it’s worth your hard earned cash.

Many of the sizes and dollar values of products are taken from online websites; please let me know if anything is listed incorrectly and I’ll be sure to fix it!  Also, for products which we don’t have here in Atlantic Canada, or for items that are more difficult to find overall, I’ll note in green where they’re located for your reference – though I tried to mostly include products relatively accessible as a whole.

Week Two: Lipsticks

I confess, I’m not much of a lipstick girl (YET…I remember the days when I wasn’t a blush girl, either), so this post is for all the classy ladies out there who can rock a great-looking strong lip.  There are so many great options out there that it was hard to narrow down the list; but I think the 25 I ended up choosing are fairly representative of the popular brands out there now.  Have a look and see what you think!

The Verdict
Best Value:
Clinique ($128.57/oz)

Worst Value:
Tom Ford ($500/oz)

Best Picks (0.14oz of product and less than $30):
Clinique – $18
Illamasqua – $24.50
Shiseido – $26
Laura Mercier – $27

Worthy Splurges (0.13oz+ of product and $35 or more):
Lancome – 0.14oz for $35
Burberry - 0.13oz for $36
Yves Saint Laurent – 0.13oz for $38
Cle de Peau Beaute – 0.14oz for $62

Even though I don’t wear lipstick for the most part, and it would seem logical that because of that, spending big $$ of lipstick would be foolish…I can’t help but still want some of those splurges in my collection.  I think that because I wouldn’t be wearing them too often, it would be such a treat to spoil myself on those rare occasions and throw on something totally luxe.  Might not be the wisest move ever, but beauty obsessions rarely are, am I right?

I hope you liked this second installment of Best Bang for Your Buck!  Come back for next week’s post!

I kind of agree, actually. I don’t wear that lipstick that often, so the fear of running through them is not there. So…I splurge. *shrug* Life’s too short for bad lipstick – and books. Right?

I think that’s an excellent motto to live by :) It just seems to me that perhaps when I do use a lipstick, it’s of awesome quality so I really feel like it’s a treat all around. Life IS too darn short, and you can’t take it with you ~sniff – wish I could bring my beauty stash though! sniff~

What the heck is Too Faced doing sitting between Burberry and Chanel?????? :O I would shell out for Chanel, and I’d shell out for Burberry. Heck, one day I’ll go insane and shell out for Tom Ford. But TOO FACED???

I also don’t understand Cle de Peau Beaute. It’s basically Shiseido in a different packaging. I like their products and all but the price makes my head spin.

You know, the only lipsticks I’ve ever finished have been MAC and Clinique. I’m doomed to remain in the bargain end for a while. :)

Even though I like the idea of splurging on a lipstick, because I know I’ll have it for a while (since I don’t wear them often), I’ve only ever finished a MAC lipstick too myself. Although now that I see they’re only 0.1oz as compared to the majority being 0.14oz, maybe that makes sense?

I don’t know what’s up with Too Faced being priced so high, it’s a little ridiculous considering their packaging looks better suited for a 12 year old. And Cle de Peau does have some beautiful items, but I really don’t think that they’re SO much better quality than anything else, that it means that they cost and arm and a leg to get them. But, I know that as I say that, I’ve paid a handsome price for a few things I own, just because they were pretty. We all go a little crazy sometimes! :P

Ok, this right here is PERFECT for me. Thanks for the breakdown! It reminds me that I need to check out those Burberry lipsticks, I mean if it’s listed under ‘worthy splurges…’

Right!? That means it has to happen. I clearly am the go-to on all things beauty *cough* :P I AM hoping these lists are somewhat useful, I find I have enough trouble whittling down my massive lemmings list, so for me it at least steers me in the right direction as to how to spend my cash. So I’m glad you liked/benefitted form it!

...And what do you have to say about all this?? Dish! :)
