You Might NEED This: Hourglass Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation

It’s been a long while since I’ve had to buy a foundation – as a haphazard user, I tend to have a bottle for well over a year (I just finished my NARS Sheer Glow, which I purchased back in January 2011).  Buying foundation usually isn’t exciting for me, but once you get down to the dregs of anything, the thought of getting something new is a thrill.  When I was in Sephora a couple weeks ago returning the Boscia cream I’d picked up (quick boo-hiss on that – it made my skin burn!!), I saw that the new ‘Immaculate Liquid Powder Foundation’ by Hourglass (which I had drooled over after seeing it on several model’s faces from previous runway shows) had been released.  First, I have to comment – it’s sort of an oxy-moron, isn’t it – ‘liquid powder’??  Now owning the product, I know what they mean, but I suspect that might be a bit confusing to consumers. Anyway, so I saw this gleaming at the store and I just had to swatch it and check it out.  I rarely try anything via swatch and want it instantly, but this was an exception.  It smoothed onto my skin leaving the most natural veil of color and a subtle luminosity that was kind of entrancing.  Designed for combination/oily skin, with anti-aging properties, and free of pretty much all baddie ingredients (see box below for the exhaustive list), it just seemed too good to be true.  I was in the market for a new foundation, but when I looked at the price – $64CAD!! – I balked and gently put it back in it’s place and slunk away. As I tend to do in Sephora, I wandered around some more just admiring the pretty things, when I happened to glance at my hand again.  The foundation had settled and had turned into a subtle, velvety finish.  I was so surprized at the change, and at how lovely it made my skin look, that I huffed it back to the kiosk and picked up a bottle in Warm Beige – the darkest shade there (unfortunately).  Before I could exert any sense, I bought it.I think pictures will show you more than I can describe.  Behold:

Bare face…yikes!

Wearing Immaculate foundation…and apparently my shirt inside-out (oops!)

Wearing Immaculate foundation with a little gloss (so I don’t look dead) and bronzer.

You can notice two things in the photos: that the foundation is a touch light and beige for my skintone, and that it makes my skin look FLAWLESS.  While I’m disappointed about the shade – which will be even more disheartening once I’ve gone down South and have got a major tan going on – I really love the coverage and I love the matte yet luminous look it gives.  I can warm it up a bit as you can see with bronzer so the shade blends better, so for now it works. The formulation is lovely – quite thin so it doesn’t feel heavy in the least, but gives great, even coverage quickly.  There are so many things to love about the foundation that I still wanted to review it, even though I’m not getting the best out of it due to the shade restrictions.  I highly recommend trying it out (or at least getting a sample) if you’re able.  The technology is superb and it seems like a perfect foundation to wear going into the warmer months.

Aside from the shade, what are your thoughts on ‘Immaculate’?  Do you think you’ll give it a look?  What kind of finish do you prefer on a foundation?

I tried this as one of my wedding contenders! I like the finish – even though I agree that it’s a bit odd – but I didn’t *love* it. It might be fabulous with the Hourglass primer, but that’s even more of an investment!

You know what’s really stupid? I haven’t even tried it with the primer yet – I have the travel size. What the eff is wrong with me?? It didn’t even occur to me LOL. I’ll admit, I’m not big on primers, which is sort of silly because with my oilier skin, I need them. I just worry about slather on just too much, ya know??

Definitely re: wedding contenders, if you need both the primer and the foundation, you’re looking at a much larger financial cost than I think it necessary, so if you didn’t love it on it’s own – pass!!

This looks amazing on you Toya!! I think you look lovely bare faced too! You have really great skin!
I wish I could try this one, but it’s way too matte for my dry skin. I’ve tried the other foundation, but I agree-their shades are a little off. I couldn’t find one to match very well.

Aww, thanks Tracy, that’s a nice compliment!! :)

Definitely if you’re not oily Tracy, I would advise against this – as soon as I put it on I can feel that it’s designed for my kind of skin. I have to be careful actually because I have a couple areas of my face that get dry patches sometimes and if I wear it there, the next day its dry and flaking. Sooo I’d say skip it ;P Weird about the shades, I just find them to be a touch – grey or something? I dunno…

Damn, you know I’m going to be ALL OVER THIS. I’m using a pretty good cheap foundation right now but I’ll be on this soon enough!

First, you don’t need a full coverage foundation (damn you) but I appreciate the before/after pics so much, so thanks for that. Second, I guess you need a nice big value-friendly bronzer to use in conjunction with this! So there, both purchases totally justified. :D

I thought of you instantly when I got this Liz, I think you will LOVE it. I honestly feel it mattifying my face and keeping the oilies at bay. I haven’t even used a primer with it yet!

I’m glad you liked the before/after pics, I find them helpful too so I figured I’d take one for the team LOL. That’s an excellent justification for bronzer you just posed there, thank YOU for that! Mwahahaha ;)

How nuts that I haven’t heard of this, but BY GEORGE….now I want to race to my nearest Sephora and play! Even though the shade seems to be a touch lighter than your skin tone, I am in love with the finish it seems to impart; smart idea in deepening it with a bit of bronzer….you look amazing, Toya! You’re such a natural beauty!! (*insert jealous face here at your great skin*)

PS: Did you like the NARS SHeer Glow? I bought a bottle when the range originally debuted, and stupidly, I only swatched it on my hand at the counter – once at home, it looked horrible on me. I procrastinated in returning it – which I totally regret :(

I’m sorry to hear that you didn’t like Sheer Glow Eugenia – it actually is one of my faves, I haven’t had one single issue with it and the shade match was PERFECT for me! Funny how that happens, eh?

Thank you for the great skin comment my dear – if you saw me in person, you might not be so kind, but right now I’ll take it :P I hope you check this out if you can, despite some of it’s failings, I still LOVE the way it looks on me and I’ll wear it for as long as I can this season!!

Dang, that’s one nice foundation! I think if I were to splurge on something, it would either be lipstick or foundation. So while I think $64 is expensive (obviously), I also think it’s worth it for the results (ignoring the shade for the moment). But yeah, I’m with everyone above, your skin is great even without it. And also, I’m experiencing major brow envy right now. Do you do your own brows/what do you use to fill them in?

Oh yeah, and why are you so pretty??

    • #10 by Latoya on March 20, 2012 - 5:09 pm

      Wow! ~blushing bright red~ … ~blushing some more~ … Thanks! (that’s about all I can manage – what a nice compliment!!!)

I think splurging on foundation or lipstick makes sense – if you’re skin looks good, you do too, and if you feel fabulous (as a lippie can often do), than you’re ready to rock and roll!

As for my brows, I do them myself with maybe a bi-yearly waxing just to maintain shape. I fill them in with the flat brown shade of MAC’s Tempting Quad from the Cult of Cherry collection from like, 2008 or 2009. My pencil ran out a while back and I’ve been too lazy to buy anything else LOL!

I received a sample of the immaculate with my sephora order and to my total surprise I LOVE it. That being said, of course apparently everyone loves it and you cannot buy it ANYWHERE?? Does anyone know what is going on / or better yet when it will be available again.

    • #12 by Latoya on September 17, 2012 - 5:20 pm

Huh, I never realized that was happening Jill! I haven’t been to Sephora in a while so I haven’t noticed this trend, but that’s a bugger! It’s truly a fantastic formula, especially for oilier skin – I hope you find the full size soon!!

You can now purchase it again on the Hourglass website. It should be back in Sephora stores soon (December 2012)

Excellent, thank you for the update Lory! I noticed it was out of stock but it’s great to hear it’s returning, it’s a fantastic formula!
