If you’ve been reading for a while, you know that I struggle with bronzers – not necessarily how to wear them, but if they should be worn at all on my dark skin. The main purpose of bronzer is to fake a ‘faux tan’ and, well…I kind of have that on the regular. However, they ALSO are used to give one’s skin a healthy glow, and to this end that look is what I’m trying to achieve (I think). Last year I thought I found ‘THE’ product in NARS’ Laguna Illuminator, however it contains sparkly bits that look unnatural in sunshine and are better left for evening events. Earlier in the year I snagged MAC’s Refined Golden bronzer (which I think I’ve had before) via swap, but then I went away down South and was too tan for it to do much of anything. I was hoping to get NARS’ Casino bronzer through another swap, but that fell through. So all summer long I’ve been sans bronzer, which of course isn’t a big deal when you have 20+ blush to play with instead, but nevertheless, my hunt was not truly over.
A few weeks ago I engaged in a swap for a Too Faced Sun Bunny bronzer, and upon receiving it I was unsure how I’d feel about it. While I’ve read great reviews about the Too Faced bronzers, they seemed so shimmery and unwearable when I swatched them in-store (hence why I swapped for it!). I finally had a chance to try it on today, and I was very surprized to find that I really liked it!
The powder is smooth and finely milled, and feels soft on the skin. Once on, it actually doesn’t look shimmery but rather imparts a great glow to the face. I wore the bronze side mainly on the underside of my cheeks, with a light dusting around my temples, and then added a touch of the lighter side on my cheekbones for some extra illumination. I kept taking photo after photo to see if I could ‘catch’ the shimmer in action, but all that appeared was a natural, warm radiance.
I included an eye makeup shot because I was diggin’ it – UD’s Crash on the top lash line, smudged, and Lise Watier’s Gold Eye Shine underneath – simple and easy!
It’s been a terribly hot and humid summer, and today was no exception. I applied this late in the morning and it’s still going strong sans primer 6 hours later, without making me look shiny or enhancing my pores. It’s only slightly muted, and I’m still rockin’ the warm and glowy, without the greasy-shiny. I’m definitely impressed! This bronzer is described as a ‘year-round’ shade, and I can definitely see that working – for my skintone as well as others. Blending the two shades together would create a lighter tone overall that perhaps even the fairest could use; however, it’s *just* deep enough for me, tanned, so it would be more of a highlight to anyone much darker than I (around NC42 for reference).
I have to admit, I don’t have much experience with Too Faced as a brand, but this bronzer far surpasses my expectations. I guiltily am affected by packaging, and I find that the line leaves much to be desired – I know some find it whimsical, but I merely find it juvenile. However, in this instance what you see is definitely not what you get. The quality of this bronzer is quite lovely and the $36CAD (0.33oz) price tag is fairly easy to swallow, though of course I didn’t pay that price
I won’t go so far as to say I’ve found THE bronzer for me (I have commitment issues, OK?), but I’m definitely going to get use out of this product for the rest of the season and beyond!
What is your favorite bronzer? Do you go for a matte, or a glow (or more obvious shimmer)? What makeup do you wear to transition into fall?

I don’t like the packaging of their products, either, but I have also heard great things about their bronzers. I think it does give you a nice glow!
Also, I know we always say this, but dang, girl, YOUR LASHES.

Man!!! I feel almost guilty for never being impressed/interested in my lashes for all those years…dang. Thank you so much for the self-love boost, Larie!!
Yep – packaging is lame, but I’m much more impressed with their bronzed than anticipated! I’ve been wearing it a lot, actually!

The bronzer is pretty, but I am too distracted by the awesomeness of your eye makeup to pay much attention to it! It may be a simple look, but it looks fantastic. Also your eyebrows are so perfect!

Wow, thanks Emi!!! I often think my brows are not very good, so thanks!!! And I’m really, really pleased the eye look translated well, because I loved it in person. Super-easy but great!!

It looks so pretty on you!!! I’m not a huge fan of their stuff-it’s kind of expensive I think for just ok stuff. But that does look really pretty on you!!!
I just got MAC Pro Longwear bronzer in Sun Dipped and I am kind of impressed with it!

Ooh I find you pull off bronzers so well, Tracy, I bet it looks stellar!! I think the packaging on the Too Faced, because it’s cheap-looking (though now that I think about it, not terribly cheap-feeling), it feels like it should cost less. But I have to say more and more I’m impressed with this, it just gives the best glow and I’m shocked it’s not glitzy!!

Hello gorgeous! I love it on you, very “glowy”. I totally agree Too Faced packaging is quite childish but they do have great products. I love the Matte chocolate solei bronzer by them. My favorite is a ‘discontinued’ bronzer from Fresh (tear)
Xx

I don’t remember seeing a Fresh bronzer before, huh! I’ve seen you rock the matte Soleil one Taylor, and it looks smashing on you. I always thought I’d hate wearing a ‘shimmery’ bronzer but this ended up being lovely and much more natural than I expected! I can deal with the packaging for something like this!

ohh Toya look how you glow! I’m with you on Too Faced packaging, wish they could just glam it up a bit. Or you know…tone it down. Well since you’re not 100% committed, I say you should go hunt some more down
#16 by Latoya on August 29, 2012 - 5:36 pm
Hehe, I probably will, though I must say I’m loving this more every day! What I need next is a matte one – I’m glad you’re diggin’ the glowy though, MM!

I sooo agree that the packaging is whimsical/juvenile. The pricing is kind of steep considering that as while TF products are good, they’re not THAT good. But this was a great score and you’re rocking it in all the right ways. Looking good!
P.S. GIVE ME YOUR LASHES NAAOOOO
#18 by Latoya on August 29, 2012 - 6:42 pm
HEREEEE you go Liz! My gift to you
I’m glad you approve, I do like this a lot despite the packaging, and of course I got it at a steal

I also dislike their packaging, but I’ve had good experience with their eyeshadow palettes, and I’m glad to hear the bronzer is quality, too! And it looks gorgeous on you

Thanks Amy! I had a shadow/liner palette once ages ago but wasn’t a fan only ’cause the pots are so small!! It’s hard to get in there. But quality-wise it’s a nice brand – just SO not into the packaging :S
