I know I’m terribly late to the game posting on this product, but as it’s not limited edition I figured that it wasn’t pressing to post it ASAP (hope that’s OK!). NARS Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil in More is my first Velvet lip pencil from NARS, and I have to say that as a lippie I’m a fan! I find it extremely easy to handle and apply (though I suspect that with a more intense shade the ability for precision might be lacking just a touch).
More is a terracotta shade that could work as either a brownish shade or almost a nude on more pigmented lips. I find that the pencil itself looks different in different lighting (as evidenced by the shots above and below) – for the most part it’s truly a medium, warm, slightly orange-y brown that is perfect for the autumnal tones of the season.
On my deeper skin tone, it definitely leans more toward being a nude-neutral shade, but with a hint of interest, which I like. Sometimes I find ‘nude’ tones can easily wash one out, but I think unless you have a very dark skin tone, this one won’t go in that direction. It also helps that this pencil has only medium pigmentation – it covers easily but it’s too dense, which allows the natural lip tone to show through a bit and keep things from veering too ‘done.’
Though this is technically a ‘gloss,’ I don’t find it terribly glossy, but rather more balm-like with a creamy texture and soft shine finish. As I don’t own any other Velvet Gloss pencils I can’t comment on whether or not others are much more glossy, but I would hazard to guess they aren’t high shine overall as the pencil form can’t physically allow for that. I have tested one other shade, Mexican Rose I believe, and while I loved it, it bled in my lip lines terribly – which is quite a feat, as I have few! More does not have the same effect, which I attribute to the shade itself not being as bright and pigmented.
Wearing ‘More’ with MAC’s Raizin blush and NARS Via Appia eye liner.
Though it’s not necessarily a shade I reach for often – I’m killing the deep berry lips this season! – I still really like More and its wearability for more neutral looks like the one above (which, incidentally, I LOVED). The creamy texture and ease of application has ensured that I’ll definitely pick up more shades in the future, and perhaps even some of the Velvet Matte lipsticks as well! They’re perfect for toting around or for travel, and since I seem to be doing a lot of that lately, it’s a bit plus in my books.
For those of you interested, the ingredient list is below (no parabens, and no fragrance – woohoo!):
I seem to be on a ‘brown’ roll here….
What do you think of More? Have you tried the Velvet Gloss Lip Pencils from NARS? Do you like the application method? Which are your favorite shades?

I like it on you! It’s a great, natural looking shade. I’ve never tried these pencils but I haven’t been really tempted by a shade, yet. I like the matte pencil shades more, but they are not paraben-free! Weird, right?

Huh. That is weird, and unfortunate. I think the matte pencils ARE superior, so that’s a shame! In any case, I think for a glossy pencil it works for me if it’s natural-looking like this one. Some of the other glossy bright shades bled on me when I tried them :S

hmm not sure how this one would look on me, but it’s an absolutely stunner on you! I like lip pencils so much. I know they’ve been done to death but they’re just SO DARN CUTE.
P.S. Killing the deep berry lips, eh? I like what I’m hearing! What are your favorites?
#6 by Latoya on September 24, 2012 - 8:42 am
Honestly, the Ellis Faas one you recommended is one of my favorite lippies overall, the shade looks SO good on me and I’ve always had a tough time working the berry tones!! So thank you thank you my dear
I do love the ease of travel and use of lip pencils, I admit. I’m fussy with brands, probably because there are so many to choose from now!

I thought this one was going to get me but oddly I took a turn for the darker matte! Weird, eh. This is such a lovely neutral on you!
#14 by Latoya on September 24, 2012 - 8:43 am
Thanks Liz! I think it’s great you went for a darker matte – I’m loving them so much right now! This is the shade I use as a palette cleanser here and there after I go wild with vampy tones for a few days

Stunning! You look great in More, Toya!
I tried this and it was a no-go for me. Felt too ’90s brown on my skin tone sadly.
#18 by Latoya on September 15, 2012 - 10:16 am
Ahh, boo Arianne! Can’t win ‘em all I guess. And there are a ton lippies that look stupid-fabulous on you, so I guess it’s ok

More looks absolutely amazing on you! I’m almost tempted to order one for myself, but I need another lippie like I need another bottle of polish…
#20 by Latoya on September 14, 2012 - 4:37 pm
Haha, do I EVER know what you mean, Lola!!! My stash has exploded somehow!! It’s definitely a great shade, but by no means a must-have, so rest easy
And it’s not LE!

Great shade on you, Toya! There’s something so satisfying about a straightforward nude lip
#22 by Latoya on September 18, 2012 - 9:55 pm
Agreed! I’d still like to find something a bit lighter for a more pronounced ‘nude’, but for everyday you can beat this one!

This is such a stunning neutral on you, Toya! I think on me it might pull a bitt too terracotta, but I love it just the same. The types of pencils by NARS are amazing; my only beef is with how much product gets wasted when you have to sharpen them, so what I do is hold on to the product that gets shaved off (I use the NARS sharpener that has a cover on it) and use that up with a brush, instead of throwing it out. I really hope the brand decides to make these in a retractible format — then, they’d be absolutely perfect! PS: good to know that it not limited!

I forgot how people have said that the product gets wasted when sharpened – thanks for the reminder Eugenia! And the trick you use to save it is smart, good thinkin’! I know it’s a tricky shade to wear, so I’m unsurprised you don’t love it. I’m just impressed with the pencil itself – gotta try some more shades!
