Playing Where’s Waldo with My Makeup Collection

I spent two hours – TWO HOURS! – last night, researching what products and shades I should to order from Becca Cosmetics (a brand I’ve yet to try and desperately want to).  My (totally logical – I swear!) reason for doing this?  To avoid purchasing any shades that were similar to ones I already own.  I DID come up with a (very) pared down list, you’ll be happy to hear; if you’re interested (and FYI – the blog Shades of BECCA is a good resource for some swatches):

Papaya Beach Tint $30CAD (hot red)

Becca Papaya Beach Tint

Fallen Angel Ultimate Color Gloss $29CAD (nude spice)

Becca Fallen Angel gloss

There were a handful of other products I liked the look of, but in checking out swatches, they seemed to be too close to items I already own (though, c’mon, the brand is gorgeous and I could have easily gone for one of everything!).  Which brings me to the point.

You’re all familiar with my organizational obsession right? (and…if you’re new and not aware: Hello!  My name is Latoya and YES, I have a problem which manifests itself into a bit of compulsive organization.  Could be worse!)  Anyway, another problem I have is lack of funds; when you own a home on your own and don’t make the big bucks, things can get tricky.  However, I have ANOTHER problem (jeez, someone institutionalize me, will ya?), which is that I love shopping – for cosmetics in particular.  Smash the three of these together and what do you get?  Well…you get THIS:

Blush Collection (2)My poor broken MAC blush up on the right :(

What ‘THIS’ is, is me taking a good look at an area of my makeup collection – specifically blush/bronzers in this instance – and seeing where I have gaps.  By gaps, I mean: what shades do I lack that I can justify buying, in order to round out my stash and also quell the burning desire to shop my face off.  Ya dig?  This fantabulous idea kills three birds three mosquitoes (no one cares about those) with one big-ass swat.   I get to organize something*, figure out what shades or products I’m missing, and rationally and systematically purchase new items that are on my wishlist and fit the ‘missing’ bill.  BOOM!

*Seriously guys, I joke but….I really like organizing things.  So much so, that near the end of the month I’m signing up for a Professional Organizers intro course to see if I’d like to become a professional organizer for realz.  It’s THAT serious :S

So, as you can see, I’m starting with blush – because clearly blush is THE BEST EVER and deserves the number one spot for allowing EVEN MORE BLUSH.  Because clearly 20 (+ 7 bronzer-type things and 2 mini-blush) are NOT ENOUGH.

(I swear I’m not on the sauce tonight guys – I just feel a little peppy ’cause I’m back into running and signed up for the Ottawa 1/2 Marathon in May…wooo! :D)

Berry & Orange blush swatchesLeft to right (flash): Rouge Bunny Rouge Florita, NARS Turkish Red, Illamasqua Tweak; NARS Taj Mahal, Make Up For Ever Blush Powder #25, Illamasqua Lover, Make Up For Ever HD Blush #12 First Kiss

Plums and RussetsLeft to right (flash): NARS Sin, Bobbi Brown Velvet Plum (discontinued shade); MAC Raizin, CoverFX Bronzed FX in Garnet, Burberry Russet, MAC Early Morning

Even with 20+ blush, I can plainly see what shades I’m lacking: A bright red! (NARS Turkish Red is more of a burgundy)  A true orange! (NARS Taj Mahal is kind of a burnt orange and quite shimmery)  A neutral pink! (…I literally do not own one beige-y pink blush, for shame)   A nice deep berry would be lovely!  And also – varying formulations!  I have NO cheek tints, and only four cream blush.  You see, there actually ARE shades/formulas I do not have despite having far more blush than is probably necessary.  And then, there are shades I need NO more of, like medium pinks…I have enough of those, yep.  I don’t think I need any more bronzers, especially since I rarely wear them and I’m already kinda *ahem* bronze.  I only really have a couple coral shades, which tends to be the one a lot of people go gaga for (myself included), but I’ll hold off till the warmer months on thinking about those right now.  Same goes for apricot-hued shades.

Pink and Coral blush swatchesLeft to right (flash): NARS Desire, Illamasqua Unrequited (discontinued shade*), theBalm Down Boy, Chanel Blush Horizon de Chanel, Benefit Bella Bamba, Illamasqua Hussy, Bobbi Brown Calypso Coral, NARS Torrid, theBalm Hot Mama

Bronzer swatchesLeft to right (flash): NARS Laguna Illuminator, Too Faced Sun Bunny Bronzing Powder, NARS Laguna Multiple, MAC Refined Golden Bronzing Powder, Milani Sunset Duos in Sunset Beach, Clinique Bronze Uplighting, Estee Lauder Illuminating Gelee in Shimmering Sands

What I’m wondering is, what gaps do YOU see?  Since I only have my stash to compare it to, I can’t get a good idea of what I’m missing.  What shades can you suggest that I should focus on buying?

Blush Collection

I’m planning on doing this little experiment with all my makeup over the next little while, so be prepared: more lame examples of my organizational obsession coming your way!  But do come back anyway, because I need your help :)

Is your makeup collection where you want it to be, or do you have a few gaps you’d like to fill?

First of all, I think your organizing course sounds fantastic & that it’s a SUPER GREAT idea for you! This takes your OCD-ness and turns it into something you could make money from, LOL! I love how organized you are personally, and I have the same tendencies: I confess to being quite lazy at times, but once I’ve had enough, I go on a total organizing frenzy!

As to gaps in your blushes, I love how you took them all out to see exactly what you have and are missing (not to self: need to do this with my makeup collections) but my philosophy is not so much to fill any colour gaps, but to always try & buy what suits my skin tone best and will properly enhance it. There are many colours I’d like to buy too (burgundy, orange) but I know that they look simply awful on me – better for my look & wallet, to stick with what will compliment me. Quality is also a huge one for me: if it doesn’t knock my socks off, is unique, or of a superb quality, I don’t want to know from it. This way of thinking has saved me tons of money this past year while prowling the makeup counters, believe me!

    • #2 by Latoya on January 10, 2013 - 3:55 pm

I agree with you on a couple points Eugenia – definitely all about quality, and it’s gotta look good. But I think that there is the right shade for everyone in each color range, which is what I’m going for I guess. Not sure if a warm red will work, so maybe a cool one, etc etc. it’s gonna be a lot of trial and error, that’s for sure!

And I’m SO pumped for my course!! Organizing is my JAM! :D

I am so jealous of your blush collection. That is amazing. I tend to gravitate to cream rather than powder formulas because I find they make my dry skin look a little nicer. Plus I’m lazy and I can apply them with my fingers, so there’s that.

Have you tried the Joe Fresh cream blushes? I have one in Apricot and I love it so much that even though I discovered the packaging was broken WHEN I BOUGHT IT (it was sealed and so I didn’t notice that the hinge was broken) and I have to hold it closed with a hair elastic, I still use it about once or twice a week. I don’t know about their colour range, though; it might be similar to what you already have.

I was very impressed with the Beach Tints. They are quite heavily scented, and while it’s a scent that is DELICIOUS, might be something to keep in mind.

I was thinking about doing the 10K in the ORW. I’ve never done a race longer than 5K, but it might be fun…right?

    • #4 by Latoya on January 9, 2013 - 7:09 pm

I need more cream formulas – I don’t have dry skin but I really love the natural glow they impart! I haven’t tried the Joe Fresh ones but every so often I pass by the little kiosk thingy and think I should grab a few things (like I need more!). I’ll have to give them a serious look-over and see what’s offered – thanks for the suggestion Sarah!

For the most part I do try and avoid scented products, but every so often I get lured in anyway >_< Cheek products, if I'm careful and don't wear scented ones consecutively, seem to be *OK* but I do try and skip them for the most part. However, I obviously do own a few (Chanel, Benefit, and Illamasqua blushes are all scented), and I use them sparingly. I bought them before I started being more strict about my routine, and since I haven't bought any more. However, with the Beach Tints, the fragrance is the last ingredient I think which sometimes I can manage, but if it's very strong I might take a pass. We'll see :(

DO THE 10K!!!!! My first race was a 1/2 marathon, dummy that I am LOL – and it was all good! You can totally do the 10K, especially if you've already done a 5er. Go for it Sarah! It really *is* fun!!

There’s a course in professional organizing??? What do you organize then?

I think you’ve hit on the gaps ;) Which, funny enough, are colors I tend to go for! I don’t have a lot of pinks or corals at all, but I like orange, red, plum. I find that MAC tends to have a big range (as does Illamasqua), and the Becca Beach Tints come in a big range, too. While I like the Beach Tints, they do take a little bit more work (I have to stipple them) so it’s not an easy fix.

    • #6 by Latoya on January 10, 2013 - 3:58 pm

I thought of you actually when I was putting this together Larie, because you’re right – you have all the shades I lack! :P And I gotta get my hands on that Libido blush you have!!

I think you organize other people’s things when you do it professionally. So if you had a messy desk full of financial papers, you’d pay me to organize ‘em into a system for you :) Or maybe I’ll get lucky and it’ll be someone’s makeup lol.

Blush porn! You have A lovely collection!! My heart is literally racing, oh boy. I’ve never wanted to try Estée Lauder but the Gelee looks amazing. Organization is a wonderful thing! I always have the best intentions but then things go very badly quickly ;-( I love the Becca glosses they are very pigmented!

You were one of the people who sold me on Fallen Angel, Taylor! It looks like the perfect nude.

I’m pleased with my collection bit definitely see room for improvement. It’s funny how pics of a huge collection of makeup can really make our hearts skip a beat, huh? lol!

Wow! That’s a whole lotta blush! You are lucky you can wear different colors, if a blush is too coral it totally goes orange on me. I was going to tell you, you can fix the MAC blush by pouring in just a bit of rubbing alchohol, it will melt down and then smooth out and be just like when you bought it. It works great, I’ve done it, a couple of times, unfortunately!

Thanks for the tip, Judi, I’ve heard that before but can never be bothered. Too late now anyway, I dropped it again and now it’s all dust :'(

Oh, and you say I’M FUNNY? Could barely draw breath throughout this entire post, omg you get me Toya. I know nothing about blush, so I can’t really see any gaps, but yes, a neutral pink sounds good. Go forth and find one! Also, that Beach Tint looks amazing. Those work for lips too, yes?

    • #12 by Latoya on January 10, 2013 - 4:03 pm

Yep, they do from what I know. I like the idea of a stained lip too. On your command, I’m totally gonna buy a neutral pink – yessir!

I’m glad I got a laugh outta you MM, I take that as the highest compliment!! :D

LOL, I had the same reaction as Larie. I wonder what the tests for those courses are like. QUICKLY, ORGANIZE XYZs! That’s amazing though. You’re always up to something interesting. :)

I’m hitting 50 on blush count again and I can’t be bothered to line them up so nicely and swatch them like you have. x__x I don’t know about you, but I used to prefer the shady in between colours that were neither here nor there. I think that’s why I’m drawn to the bright primary shades lately. Eugenia brings up a good point about getting what looks good though, but I guess it all depends on what our aim is. I’m feeling experimental lately so I find myself scouring the stores/internet for unusual shades more often than not.

    • #14 by Latoya on January 10, 2013 - 4:05 pm

I like your plan Liz. I think I’m sorta on the same hunt, just not your usual same old. It can be a lot of investigative work! Isn’t it crazy that you can have a ton of shades and there are still missing ones?

I have no idea what they’d test on, now that you mention it! I’ll report back when the time comes and letcha know lol.

haha this is *awesome*, Toya! You have a beautiful collection! I don’t know about organizing but I LOVE making lists. After I read this post, I made a list of all my blushes to figure out which shades i needed and I’ve found that I could really do with an amber, russett (eyeing your Burberry Russett blush right now!! :P) and a pinky-nude color. And of course we CAN’T have that so I must go shopping IMMEDIATELY! :P

    • #16 by Latoya on January 11, 2013 - 11:34 am

Hahaha it’s so easy to convince ourselves to shop more, huh? :P At least if I’m not buying the same shades over and over, I don’t feel so bad spending the cash on ‘justifiable’ purchases. I’d be interested to know what products you pick up!

This is so great! I love your organizational skills, Toya, and what a lovely blush collection! I definitely recommend finding a nude-ish blush, because it’s just so handy to have (Cargo Tonga fills that purpose for me, but I can’t imagine that would work for you, too, ha!). I’m passively looking for a lilac blush and bright red blush, but it’s really a snag-it-if-I-happen-upon-it kind of thing. I’m a lipstick girl at heart, after all ;)

    • #18 by Latoya on January 11, 2013 - 11:26 am

I’m both a lipstick and blush fiend now – ulp! I’m in serious trouble then! I definitely will heed your advice and pick up a more neutral blush – I have my eye on MAC’s Blushbaby, I think it’s going to happen!! :)

HAHA I have to say, I’m pretty sure you are a full fledged Blush Fiend lady! Look at all those pretties! Myself, I’m going to be downsizing the stash. I’m finding too many choices is bogging me down when it comes to my makeup. Good luck on your blush quest!
So after you do this course, will you come organize my house for me? Please?

    • #20 by Latoya on January 11, 2013 - 11:23 am

Yes, I most certainly will Tracy!! It would be my pleasure! Can I start with your makeup ;)

I am definitely a blush fiend, I won’t deny. I keep myself on a tight leash but if I could I’d buy about 10 more shades in a heartbeat! Downsizing!! Feel free to pass them this way my dear :P

Gaps? What gaps? This is an impressive collection! You have some vivid colors, and you are lucky you can also wear shades like the Illamasqua lover – that looks amazing on your skin. Maybe some neutral matte shades for a mod 60s look?

    • #22 by Latoya on January 30, 2013 - 10:25 pm

Hahaha…yea, I have a lot of blush :P I think you’ve got something there with the neutral mattes, it’s definitely an area I lack and I think I could get some super-cool looks with one! Thanks for the suggestion, Maura!
