So, I’ve been a somewhat MIA this week – I had been getting headaches at work this week staring at my computer screen so much, so when I came home I wanted nothing to do with computers, period. It happens sometimes from the whiteness of the screen and the glare – I have glasses just for this purpose, but at times I forget to put them on, or I’m staring for so long it doesn’t matter anymore anyway. However! Seems I’m back to normal now and I have a bunch of posts lined up so all is well
You know how sometimes you get something in your head and you just can’t get it out ’till you do something about it? I was in one of those mindsets on Friday when I decided I needed to create better storage for my makeup drawer. I’ve been pulling out seasonal shades and piling them in one of my bathroom drawers for easy access to items I use most often, except it looked messy and kinda irritated me a bit (hi, OCD!). I was reading Joey’space blog and she has a lovely set up of her makeup etc., and I got it in my head I had to get my shit straightened out too. Somehow I got on to buying bamboo drawer organizers, and almost bought a bunch online, but the shipping was atrocious at two different websites I was on (for those interested, they were The Container Store, and Crate & Barrel). Then I saw them available at Bed, Bath & Beyond, and managed to finagle* one of my friends into swinging by there while we were out on Saturday. Again, me being extremely eager, I got everything set up when I got home – which was after midnight but HECK, a chance at organization!? Yea, I’m gonna be all over that no matter what the hour LOL.
*Apparently this means: 1) to obtain (something) by devious or dishonest means, or 2) to act in a devious or dishonest manner. NOT the case! I just thought this meant to sort of convince someone of something in a bit of a roundabout way…well! You learn something new.
Eeeeeeeee! Me love things in neat little rows!
Seriously though, it’s a bit ridiculous how much pleasure this gives me. Just looking at this makes my heart skip a beat!
So, as you can see, on one side I’ve got my powders, bronzers and concealers, and then my palettes and a couple stray shadows which constitute my every day brow color and brow highlight. Then I’ve got my eye pencils (and there are mascaras in there, buried), blush, shadows, lipsticks, and glosses, all in their own small spaces. Aside from the lipsticks (because…guilty blogger here…that’s ALL the lipsticks I own. Eeep! I am shocked too!), all of the shades I have out are ‘seasonal’ which means they’ve all got a wintery vibe going on. I have all my additional makeup still in my cute lil pink Sephora train case, but it’s looking and feeling considerably diminished, which is OK by me. I tend to use what’s in front of me, and now everything is laid out so well!
Lastly, I picked up this bamboo counter tray (it’s actually called a ‘tank tray’ as it was designed to be used on the top of my toilet tank LOL), to hold my brush container, a few tools (tweezers, sharpener, scissors, etc), and makeup and skincare that have to be stored upright. This looks so much more tidy than before – I had my foundation and primers in a little corner of my bathroom counter, and then my skincare items in another corner, and it just looked messy. Totally digging this!
There are a few upgrades I’m hoping to do to my condo over the next few months, all of which will be much more conspicuous in terms of making it look nicer, but leave it to a beauty blogger to ensure her makeup looks good first before all else LOL. But you know, I spend a lot of quality time in my bathroom (it’s also the first and one room I’ve painted so far
), and I want it to look great and be functional. Now I can move on to the rest!
How do you store your makeup? Are you meticulous or is it more haphazard?

this is a great system, I’m so envious!
we have serious space limitations in our tiny flat, so my favourite nail polishes are on a shelf set in the corridor, organised by brand. The rest of my nail stuff is under the bed in boxes I got my Carmine, Joliebox & MaBoiteABeaute goodies in. Make up is in a basket next to the sink, (there aren’t dividers but I do organise by type) perfume and make up brushes in a basket next to that and hair stuff in a tray next to my mirror in the bedroom. I love how we have some of the same products !

Awesome, Brijit! I always like to see other people using some of the same things too
I started out storing my makeup and polish in a similar way, but slowly I’ve started to expand and make more room. It’s just like any other collection; you want to showcase it properly!

I love this! I have a bunch of those stacked on my dresser for jewelry. I really should update my makeup storage – it is all crammed into a drawer in my bedside table – but I keep coming up with reasons why it’s fine for now.

Ahah yea I think we all start somewhere Sarah…but now that you’re blogging, just wait. Everything you were OK with, starts to change and you’ll find yourself crazy like the rest of us

This is beautiful storage, I love it! I have about half my makeup in my vanity, which is great, but the other half is in a cheap plastic storage container with drawers, which I would love to upgrade.

It’s all about finding something that appeals to you I think, Emi! It sounds like you’ve got a pretty good setup (a vanity! So envious!) so when you come across something you lie for the other bits and bobs, I’m sure you’ll make it happen

ahhh it’s so organized and pretty, I love it! Isn’t it nice not to have to spend 10 minutes looking for something?
So what’s the system with the Sephora train case? Do you ever rotate things out? I used to have a great system all worked out at home, but I’m still working on my storage here. Everything on top of the desk is great, but I have a couple of makeup bags I still need to sort out crammed into drawers.

Yea, it can’t be easy finding a good system in a dorm room, MM! I have my non-seasonal (in my mind) items in my train case, along with extras like primers or foundations I use infrequently. Or ‘crazier’ products like glitter liners. So each season, for the most part, certain things get swapped out for other shades more applicable for the season. Just another excuse for me to organize regularly, really lol!

Wwwwwuuuuuaoooow. So neat! I just love seeing collections neatly organized like this. It makes you appreciate what you have.
I gotta do this.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Arianne! I DO appreciate what I have more, now that I can see so much of it in plain sight. And stored this way you can see HOW much you have. I would LOVE to see your stash!!!!

Fun and functional
I have a train case, though I’ve been thinking about changing that up…but I haven’t decided how, so for now, train case it is!
#12 by Latoya on January 21, 2013 - 3:48 pm
I think train cases are great Larie! I’ve had mine for about 6-7 years and it has served me well. However, I sometimes tire of pulling it out and putting it back all the time, so splitting my stash helps me to manage a bit better, hence this seems to be perfect for me! (for now. LOL)
