Sunday Afternoon Fun: My Lip Color Collection! (Part I – Lip Glosses)

After my last swatch-a-palooza, my poor arms were in rough shape (literally), looking like I had a case of serious carpet burn.  They’ve finally healed, so I thought that spending the afternoon swatching all my lip glosses, balms, and lipsticks was the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday.  This finishes up my makeup color collection (see previous posts on my blush/bronzer, eyeliner, and eyeshadow collections!) – I hope you enjoyed sneaking a peek into my stash as much as I did going through it all (swatch-burn aside).  This has been the absolute perfect way to curb my spending, revisit neglected shades, and get inspired by what I already own – you may have noticed I’ve been playing a lot more with color and posting more FOTD’s for your viewing pleasure.  I highly encourage anyone with a more than moderate collection to indulge in a similar practice!!  So, so fun :)

My Lipgloss Collection

As these posts can get a little picture-heavy, I’m splitting up  my lip colors into two posts – first, my lipgloss collection, which will include the few colored balms I have as they all have shiny, sheer finishes (which is what I consider the general definition of a gloss); the second post will contain all the lipsticks I own (which incidentally includes one product that is called a gloss but I find far too pigmented to dub it so).

Let’s start with the neutrals, which are often the gateway shade when one is starting a makeup collection:

Neutral Lipglosses (2)

Neutral Lipglosses

Natural light

Left to right: Benefit Ultra Plush in Dallas, Fresh Sugar Honey Tinted Lip Treatment, Benefit Ultra Plush in Hoola, MAC Lipglass in Clear, Illamasqua Sheer Lipgloss in Opulent, Hourglass Extreme Sheen in Ignite, Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Discrete, Clinique Chubby Stick in Graped Up, Pur Minerals Lip Gloss in Passion

I was surprized to find that I had so many neutral glosses – I always feel like I’m looking for one and never quite get what I need.  Laura Mercier’s Discrete is probably the best shade of the bunch when I need something but want to keep the lips lowkey (but not nude), but I wish it were a creme and not with that shimmery finish.  I also like Benefit’s Hoola which is essentially clear but with a hint of sparkle to keep it interesting.  The rest of these I’m pretty much ‘meh’ over, sad to say.

Cool-toned glosses:

Left to right: Benefit Ultra Plush in Dandelion, Tarte Vitamin-Infused in 40 Winks, Buxom Big & Healthy Lip Polish in April, MAC Chromeglass in Prize Shine (I think), Illamasqua Sheer Lipgloss in Divine, it Cosmetics Vitality Lip Flush in Je Ne Sais Quoi, Benefit Ultra Plush in Bella Bamba

The three baby pinks on the left are all quite nice and each look different on the lip – the Benefit gloss is pretty basic; the Tarte gloss has a sheer pink base with gold shimmer for warmer looks; and the Buxom gloss is a bit more opaque with quite a bit of silver sparkle, which I love in winter and for nights out.  The MAC lipgloss here I picked up ages ago (the name is worn off, so I’m not 100% sure, but I think it was Prize Shine), and I got it because of this promo pic:

MAC Chromeglass

Actually, it was this girl with this makeup but the shot was at a different angle (which I can’t seem to find online).  Anyway, she looked AMAZING and since her skintone is close to mine, at the time I thought it’d be a great idea.  Uh…. It is one SERIOUSLY METALLIC lipgloss, which makes it exceptionally hard to wear :S  However, back then I was determined to make it work, and picked up…ah damn, I can’t remember now, but it was *like* C-Thru but it wasn’t that.  Anyway (getting rambly here!), I paired the pale milky sheer nudeness of *whatever it was* with Prize Shine, and BAM!  We got this:

Me circa 2006! Check out those majorly groomed eyebrows and purple shadow (wonder what shade that was). Also, that gal with me is still one of my besties - I would have shown her full face (hate cropping people out) but I don't think she wants to have her mug online all the time like mine lol.

It probably seems crazy that I can remember what I was wearing for a lip color in a photo from 5 years+ ago, but that’s the life of a beauty obsessed gal.  What can I say?  In any case, this was a combo I was totally infatuated with, but  you only needed the tiniest bit of the metallic purple, so I’ve still got about 1/3 left of this gloss (which is LE by the way) – I ran out of the other shade long ago.  I’m determined to finish it this year!

The last two shades are nothing to write home about, the but 3rd from last – Illamasqua’s Divine – will be getting it’s own post.  I got this on mega-sale a couple months ago and I LOVE IT SO MUCH.  Best cool-toned pink ever!!!

Lastly, we have the warmer-toned glosses:

Warm lipglosses (2)

Warm lipglosses

Natural light

Sephora Reflex Gloss in She Sparkles, NARS Lip Gloss in Wonder, MAC Dazzleglass Creme in Luscious Spark, Benefit Ultra Plush in Coralista, MAC Tendertone in Purring, YSL Glossy Stain in #7 Corail Aquatique, MAC Lipglass in Lychee Luxe, Illamasqua Intense Lip Gloss in Plentiful

This shades of gloss are clearly my fave.  I went through a big kick wearing Sephora She Sparkles last Christmas, but haven’t worn it much since.  NARS Wonder and MAC Luscious Spark (LE) are lovely in summer, and I highly enjoy MAC’s Lychee Luxe – so much so that it’s almost finish (yay!).  I’m going to play around with Illamasqua’s Plentiful this spring, as if you recall it was a touch light for my skintone, but I think I can make it work.  I want to love the YSL Glossy Stain, but the fragrance is a little off-putting (mainly because it makes me nervous), and I wish I had chosen a more punchy shade.  I’ll probably pick up another over the next while and I’ll reevaluate my feelings on them then.

So that’s my gloss collection!  It’s actually not SO huge, at 24, considering.  Maybe I’ll set a mental ‘max’ at 25 – so I better hop to is using some of these up!  I’m actually not huge into gloss right now, opting more for a bold lipstick, or even bare lips, but here and there I’ll throw one on, as they can be a convenient way to perk up your look.  My wishlist has very few glosses on it and many, MANY lipsticks, so topping off at 25 should be a piece of cake :)

My Lipgloss Collection (2)

I don’t think I’m desperately missing any shades here, though not because it’s such a vast array, but more so because as mentioned, I’m just not terribly concerned with gloss.  A nice nude may help round it out, and I have one in mind actually – Becca’s Ultimate Color Gloss in Fallen Angel.  There!  25 it is.

Do you prefer gloss or lipstick (or neither)?  What shades tend to be your go-to’s?

Oh my word, are you ever gorgeous! Seriously, your bone structure is insane.

And that is indeed a really nice, well-rounded lip gloss collection. Sometimes people go on shimmer overload with glosses, but it’s those cremes and jelly-finish glosses that tend to be most flattering.

    • #2 by Latoya on February 24, 2013 - 6:46 pm

Aww Maggie, thank you!! Keep in mind that photo is from 2006 lol – 6 years can do a lot of damage to a face! :P

As a whole, I’m not a fan of shimmery glosses – when buying new ones, I usually steer clear, as I find it can look like TOO MUCH and I hate when they feel glittery. I think I’ve got a mix of both but moving forward I’m fairly certain I’ll be sticking to cremes and jellies :)

I am liking really bright pinks right now for some reason. Kat

    • #4 by Latoya on February 24, 2013 - 6:45 pm

Then you would LOVE the Illamasqua Divine gloss, Kat – it’s fabulous!!

Toya, you are such a stunner! Seriously, your skin is perfect!

As for my go-tos, pink is generally what I reach for the most year round. I find it generally suits me the most. I do like wearing peaches and corals during the warmer months, though. :)

    • #6 by Latoya on February 24, 2013 - 10:02 pm

Thanks Dani! That’s my 24 year old skin, mind you ;) It’s so strange, I have hardly any real pink lip colors as a whole – I need to change that! I don’t know what my deal is there… ?

Great collection! It’s been montht that I’m becoming a “lipstick girl” instead of a lipgloss one..don’t ask me why! I don’t know, haha!

    • #8 by Latoya on February 25, 2013 - 6:42 am

Probably because a bold lip is so popular now, Satine! We have so many choices, how could you resist?? ;)

I prefer lipstick to gloss in general, but I tend to layer gloss on top of lipstick. My go-to glosses are MAC’s Cremesheen Glasses, because they’re totally non-sticky but very high in shine and hydration. But I tend to layer those because they’re not the most pigmented glosses. I’m nearly done my Cremesheen Glass in Double Happiness — I layer it over pretty much any nude lipstick, or if I want to add warmth to a lipstick shade.

This post is making me wanna bust out my Illamasqua glosses, though — totally forgot about them! :)

Yea, do it up Denise! They’re fun :)

You know, it’s strange – I never layer my lipsticks and glosses. I don’t know why! Weird, huh??

I am in awe of your commitment to swatching, even at the expense of your arms. I’m really enjoying these posts.

Even though lipglosses are something that I somehow manage to collect, I’m definitely more of a lipstick or (tinted) lipbalm kinda gal. Now that I have long hair my aversion to anything sticky on my lips is even more pronounced. I just cannot deal with the feeling of getting hair stuck to my lips.

    • #12 by Latoya on February 27, 2013 - 8:55 pm

I’m so happy you like them Sarah!! They are a labour of love but they’re fun for me too :)

Its funny about glosses isn’t it? I have a lot more than I actually wear too, it’s weird. Maybe a throwback to my youth… :P

  7. #13 by Larie on February 25, 2013 - 1:42 pm

    You. Are. Gorgeous.

I think I need a good neutral gloss, too – not like, NUDE NUDE, but something natural. I want another Becca gloss, too, or Dior – I’ve decided that gloss HAS to be moisturizing.

    • #14 by Latoya on February 25, 2013 - 6:09 pm

That’s fair, Larie – I think that’s a great way to screen out potentials *adding mental note*. A good natural gloss is kind of like, the only shade you need if you’re more of a lipstick wearer, I think! Eventually I’d like to have a small stash of glosses because I really only wear them when I’m going for a more natural look anyway.

And – my 24 year old self says ‘thank you’ :)

Ugh, Toya, why do you make everything look so good? Your lashes are INSANE. And Prize Shine is so unique! Though I can see how it would be way metallic. I really like the look of the YSL, actually, though I do agree about the fragrance, and Lychee Luxe is GORGEOUS, but I find the lipglass formula too sticky. It seems like you have a nice range here! I’m partial to lipsticks and liquid lipsticks myself, though I’ve grown to hate gloss less (haha, damning with faint praise!). They can be a nice, subtle addition.

  9. #16 by Makeup Morsels on February 26, 2013 - 3:48 am

Toya, you’re so pretty! I’m loving that lip combo on you.

I think your gloss collection is pretty much complete! Honestly, I should have just stopped at one sheer, one red, and one nude, but pffft does that sound like me? I have too many glosses that aren’t being worn at this point (gave away some of the barely touched ones last week, and STILL), so I’m trying to downsize. Oh, but I do have to say, one gloss I do not regret getting is MAC Spring Bean. I know green gloss sounds all kinds of weird, but I love it (the shade at least, not so crazy about the formula now that I’ve tried better ones).

So fun! I am going to tackle this project also. What a good way to remind yourself of what you have!!

Toya, you’re such a doll – want to just squish you! Love looking at collection/stash posts (I’m such a beauty voyeur!) and you’re a real trooper to have endured “beauty” burn for our viewing pleasure – thanks! I would really love to do a similar post, but I’ll probably have to break it down to one post per colour grouping – there’s a lot of products hanging about the omorphia beauty closets, lol!

PS: I also think this is an excellent way to stem the urge to buy, buy, buy — you get to enjoy all the shades you may have forgotten about, making them fresh & new again!

  12. #19 by BeautyReflections (@BeautyReflectTS) on February 27, 2013 - 6:15 pm

Man I admire you for swatching your stash! I could never do it-I’d lose interest half way through and mix up the names that go with the swatches for sure!

  13. #20 by Liz (@Reductionista) on February 28, 2013 - 12:22 am

How adorable are you in that pic?? And I can attest that there is no damage to that face whatsoever. IT’S BETTER.

25 sounds like a good number for a lip gloss collection. I see a great variety here and am glad to hear you’re going to pick up a more punchier shade in the future. ;) I was all about only glosses in the past but now I’d like to downsize the glosses and focus on lipsticks as well. Love all the swatches!
