Another Rave Review for YSL’s Rouge Volupte Shine in #8 Pink in Confidence

Hallo everyone!  I hope you all had a great weekend :)  Mine was good but effing busy – I helped my friend clean and move into her newly built house (gorgeous!), who’s wedding I also happen to be standing in next month (my first time [since I was a kid] – I’M SO EXCITED!!!!!!) – so I also spent some time preparing for her bachelorette/wedding.  It’s such a fantastic experience, all of it, but its quite involved!  On top of all that, I’m also training for that half marathon I’m doing in Ottawa at the end of May, so every weekend I have to find time to do a long run – this weekend was 15k so at this point it starts to take up a fair chunk of time.  But, running is honestly the best thing I have EVER done for myself, so it’s well worth it.  *Just as an aside – if you even have a remote inkling that you might like to run, or if you run at all – casually or more routinely – I highly recommend signing up to do a half (or, if you’re super-ambitious, a full) marathon, it is an amazing experience and I love it so damn much.  This will be my third half, and every long run is better than the last – this is the best training I’ve had yet and I really think I’m gonna rock the shit out of the race!!  Fingers crossed for me :)

Ok, moving on.  As many of you know, I went on a bit of a lippie binge in the past couple weeks, and I’m still working through the reviews of each.  Today I’m going to show you a shade that’s been pretty talked up in the blogosphere – YSL’s Rouge Volupte Shine #8 Pink in Confidence.  Since I’m certain many of you have read reviews on both the RVS formula (ultra-hydrating, antioxidant-full, sheer to medium coverage glossy lipstick) as well as this shade, I’m going to keep the chatter to a minimum and let the pictures do the talking.

Pink in Confidence is described as a dusty pale pink, and I think that’s pretty accurate.  Somehow, I didn’t own a nice soft pink shade, so this has been a much needed addition to my collection.  As you can see in the lipstick bullet itself (picture below shows it better), there is a very fine micro-shimmer present, but I find it shows up on the lip very minimally.

While the Rouge Volupte Shines have a translucency to them that allows your natural lip color to show through, they’re actually more opaque than I thought, and this shade can mute my natural lip tone quite a bit if I layer it on (above, it was swatched first with one swipe, then several, to show how it can be built up).  I’m a touch concerned that it may be a bit too light for my skintone once I get tanned – or perhaps it just might be a great nude.  Time will tell.

The uber-long list of ingredients makes me somewhat nervous; however, I did not notice any irritation or roughness over the course of wearing this a few days in a row, even with the inclusion of fragrance (which, by the way, smells totally delicious.  It makes me think of the lip balms I used to wear as a young teen :)).  I did find the formula mildly hydrating, though by no means as moisturizing as the claims made by the brand (which was to ‘seal in moisture for up to 8 hours’).  The wear time is minimal – perhaps an hour or two at best, though I knew going into the purchase that these would likely require continuous application, which I’m OK with.  I have never tried the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines so I can’t compare, but from reading reviews it sounds like these might be superior in terms of hydration and longevity.  But – don’t quote me on that.

Overall, I’ve found this lipstick exceptionally wearable and notice myself reaching for it quite often.  It filled a much needed gap in my lippie arsenal, and while it’s not perfect (could be a touch deeper in tone and wear a bit longer), it will definitely get a lot of use.  I’m not sold on the $39CAD price tag, and if I didn’t have the 15% VIB discount I may not have gone for it, but I don’t feel any guilt in the purchase either so obviously it’s doing something right ;)

Have you tried the Rouge Volupte Shine’ formula yet?  Do you plan to?  Have you tried both these and the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines?  How do they compare?

PREEEETTY!! I swatched these yesterday at the counter and fell. in. love. Didn’t walk away with any because at that point I had already spent about $100 more than I had planned to so it’s definitely going on the list for next time! :P

Well, I think you’re safe Becca, as I don’t think these are going anywhere! They seem crazy-popular. I think for me I picked the best shade of the bunch in terms of my typical lip look – I either go for super bold or ultra-natural to suit a bolder eye look, so while I like this one I’m happy keeping it just at one. I hope you do pick one (or a few) up though!

I’ve never been too interested in this formula but glad you love it!

Seriously impressed by the 15k marathon. I watched my sister run a 5k this morning and was thinking how sad it was that I huff and puff half a block to the bus stop, LOL. You go, girl!

    • #4 by Latoya on April 21, 2013 - 9:32 pm

Haha thanks Liz :) Running isn’t for everyone! There’s lots of activities I totally suck at though haha – running is just my thang :)

And while I enjoy this lippie, I don’t think you’re fully missing anything!

Woohoo, Toya! S. is actually a runner – he’s done a couple of full marathons and a handful of half-marathons, but I’m not much for running. I did make myself go through a regimen so I can run a 5K at a decent pace now, and it’s nice to be able to go out for a run every once in a while, but I’m just not into it the way he is. Those long runs are killer – they totally eat up a day! Haha! I could never run that long T_T Respect!

    • #6 by Latoya on April 22, 2013 - 6:48 am

Ok, you could definitely do a long run physically Larie – I know how buff you are! – but its the mental part thats tricky. Running is all a mind game – my run this weekend had me really anxious because it was super foggy/misty out and I thought the humidity would kill me b/c of my asthma, and I was almost hyperventilating beforehand (seriously!) – but I ended up doing great and I just had to talk myself through it. Good for S. doing a full – rock on!!!

I’d LOVE to be able to do a half marathon, but I don’t think my MS legs can do it. It’s too much for me even running every day lately, so I don’t anymore. So amazing that you can do them Toya! Good for you!
Love the lippie on you! It’s such a pretty wearable shade and yay for treating yourself!

    • #8 by Latoya on April 22, 2013 - 6:51 am

Thank you my love, for both compliments :) I’m sorry to hear your MS is restricting you – I always forget about it because you’re so positive and full of pep! That’s frustrating. Bit the fact that you run at all is so awesome, Tracy! That deserves accolades in and of itself :)

Too bad about the short wear time, because I do like how it looks and the color is great!

Thanks Melissa! It is a great color – I think it would look amazing on you!

Congratulations on your running! I realised the other day that I need to step up my game – I can do a 5k without losing breath, but I need to be able to run twice that for the end of May! I admire your ability to do such long distances.

    • #12 by Latoya on April 22, 2013 - 12:30 pm

Are you doing a 10k during the race weekend Sarah??? We could celebrate afterward with brunch or something!! Good for you :D I hope you kick your goals in the ass my dear!

I have this one too! I find it wears the shortest of the 3 shines I have, and it is the sheerest. It does give the lips a lovely nude shine though. Good luck on your marathon!! That’s awesome, it’s something I have always wanted to do, maybe one day :-)

    • #14 by Latoya on April 23, 2013 - 6:51 am

Thanks Taylor! You should totally do it, it’s the best feeling!!!

I actually got this lippie because I saw how lovely it looked on you :) It’s not quite as nice on me but I still love it!

Oh, how exciting! I hope you have an amazing race. :)

This is a lovely color on you. I prefer my YSL shines to my Chanels. They stick better, in my experience.

    • #16 by Latoya on April 29, 2013 - 3:39 pm

Thanks Lola! I hope I rock it out :) I’m glad to hear you favor the YSL’s since I haven’t tried the Chanel version – sounds like I made a good choice :)

Haven’t tried the YSL Rouge Volupte Shines yet, but I’m trying not to get tempted, ’cause I wasn’t that pleased with the YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Glossy Balms… If they are anything like the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines, though, I may have to pick up a couple shades. But seriously, $39 makes me cringe. They’re $5 cheaper in the US, though. If a colour intrigues me enough, perhaps I will get one when I’m in NYC… :P

Good luck on your marathon!!! Any chance you’ll come to Toronto after your trip to Ottawa?

    • #18 by Latoya on April 29, 2013 - 3:55 pm

I wish!!! I’d love to have a lil trip to T.O. I should have planned that better. Maybe now that I have a roomie which means extra cash, I can plan a visit. You and Liz and fun times! So needs to happen :)

I would say check the YSL’s out my dear. I think you’ll love ‘em !!

I haven’t tried the Chanel Rouge Coco Shines, but I always hear that they disappear in about two hours, so it seems like these have the upper hand as far as longevity is concerned. I’ve been really tempted to check them out lately because the swatches look so good, but I think I’ll hold off until I finish at least one lipstick (gahhh why is it so hard??). Also, Toya why are you such a badass?! I can barely last five minutes on the treadmill LOL, it’s a work in progress. It’s awesome that you’re running a half marathon. You’ll have to let us know how that goes :D

    • #20 by Latoya on May 14, 2013 - 6:55 am

I certainly will MM! I think it’s gonna be good, training has been great so far! Thanks for the vote of confidence :)

I understand wanting to finish a lippie before picking up a new one – I’m TRYING to do that too but it is so freakin’ hard. DAMN.

I tend to gravitate towards longer wearing, more opaque lippies, but with the arrival of spring I’m feeling very tempted by sheerer, glossier ones, and this one looks lovely! Maybe I’ll spring for one as a reward sometime :)

    • #22 by Latoya on May 5, 2013 - 3:29 pm

I think that would be the perfect treat, Amy! While I doubt I’ll buy another as I like more pigmentation in my lippies, I think this was the perfect sheer-ish shade to choose for me and I actually wear it a lot!

hi! New to your blog and loving it so far. I bought one of these too during the VIB sale, #9, it’s more of a nude pink. Although I did consider this one too.

I love to run too, I find it totally freeing and very meditative. good luck with your runs!

THANK YOU! for reading and enjoying, and thank you re: running – you as well!

The Rouge Volupte’s have so many great shades, I know which one you mean and it’s lovely too!
