Royal Rajah Ruby, Take Two (I Take It All Back)

Remember when I swatched OPI’s Royal Rajah Ruby and expressed that while it technically worked well with my skintone,  I just couldn’t get into the shade?  Well, color me mistaken.  Check it out as a pedi shade!!!!

Worn with Chanel’s Peridot on hands

Look how it glows!

I had another shade that I felt similarly about, Deborah Lippmann’s Nefertiti - a gold flecked with bits of pewter – and the lovely Eugenia of Ommorphia Beauty Bar had a suggestion to try it out as a pedicure shade before dismissing it altogether.  Though it didn’t work either way (and just last week I unloaded it, along with about 20 other polishes, on the perfectly polished Sparkled Beauty), ever since I’ve been giving any polish shades that just don’t float my boat a second chance on my tootsies.  Royal Rajah Ruby was a resounding success!!!  I absolutely adore this on my toes and I literally had to be careful not to walk into walls while wearing it, because I kept admiring my feet :P

Especially with these sandals, I just love love loved it!  So, moral of the story – play around a bit before you completely give up on an item.  I’m so thankful I did, as I’ve just found my fall pedi shade!

It’s just a quickie post today – I have two products that I’m insanely delinquent in showing you, but honestly – I’m just not sure I love them all that much!  I’ve worn them both only once and have had them for over a month…I just don’t know how I feel about them, and without actually giving them a real chance, I can’t feel good about discussing them.  But I plan to wear them again this week and I will finally make a decision.  Could be that they’re just like the polish – I just haven’t found THE way to wear ‘em yet! :)

What do you do with products you’re unsure of?  Do you play around with them and figure out ways to wear them, or do you just decide they’re not for you and return them (or give them away!)?  And also – do you wear polish on your toes during the cooler months??

The Times, They Are A Changin’

Hello my neglected beauties!  I am so far behind in everything in life it seems – isn’t summer supposed to be carefree and relaxed!?  While I’ve had a lot of good times the past couple months, I’ve hardly had any time to address my ‘real’ life (guess that’s escapism to the max, eh?).  I’ve flown out of the province three times in August alone (twice to Newfoundland and now to Ontario – I’m actually in the airport right now heading to Ottawa), and while I LOVE to travel, I didn’t realize how hard it is to get back on track when you return.  Soon I’ll have been away from home for 12 out of 31 days – that’s a whole third of the month – and it’s kind of nuts. Fun – but nuts.

Look I did for a cottage party I went to – my friend’s family does a washer toss tournament every year, and this year there was a record 50 participants!  As the cottage is right on a lake, I wore only MUFE’s waterproof Aqua Liner in #5 (diamond turquoise blue) and a touch of mascara – it gave enough impact all by itself!

To add to all that, recently my boyfriend and I broke up.  So not only am I away physically but I’ve also mentally been not entirely present the past week or two.  However, I know that everyone has ‘stuff’ that goes on in their lives and they keep on moving, so I don’t want to lean on this as an excuse.  Most bloggers have busy lives and children and the like, and they post WAY more than me on a good week.  I merely just want to explain my absence so you know it’s only temporary!  Well…at least until October.  Then I’ll be away for 35 days and you’ll be lucky if I’ve got a post a week coming out.  LOL.  But THEN!  Then I will be blogger extraordinaire, I *promise.*

Mani/Pedi Combo with MAC’s Mischievous Mint on toes and a-England’s Saint George on fingers…see how often I wear the ‘Mint’ shade!?  LOVE it.

The most frustrating part about all this is that while moving forward my budget will be next to zero for beauty purchases (paying for a condo on my own is NOT going to be easy), I bought a slew of fun, beautiful things in the past couple months I’ve been desperate to talk to you about!  Actually, to be honest, a lot of those things I haven’t even had the time to experiment with myself, and they’re just in a forlorn little pile in my bathroom begging to be adored.  Since I’ve been traveling so much, most of these items haven’t come with me because I’m crazy-anal about keeping my makeup pristine, and I’m nervous about things getting banged up or broken (I’m still sore over my MAC Early Morning blush being in pieces :S).  Argh!  I hate not being able to multitask.  LOL!

Make Up For Ever’s Rouge Artist Natural Lipstick in N10 (iridescent copper pink).  It was the shade the MUFE Artist matched me with for my ultimate ‘MLBB’ shade.  It’s quite pretty but I see to either veer lighter, darker or more bold with lippies for the most part.  See link above for original review on formula.

But ladies (and maybe gents??)…there appears to be a silver-lining for you now.  It was just announced that my flight has been delayed for 2 hours – surely I can pump out a post or three in that time!?  Its not going to be any of the new, good stuff, but I have a boatload of photos from other items I’ve been meaning to show you.  So sit back and get comfy…I have a lot of making up to do!

Mani-Pedi Combo Using a Fave and a Dud

In my challenge to post original Summer polish combo’s, I decided to create a pairing using one of my favorite shades, butter London’s Snog (which also happens to be the number one ‘search’ for people who stumble upon the blog), and match it with a total snooze of a shade, Zoya’s Cho – which if you recall, totally left me cold.  I learned last year from some of my favorite fellow bloggers, that sometimes a shade which falls flat on the hand can work as a pedicure shade just fine, so I gave Cho one more chance to WOW me and used it as the pedi shade in this instance.  Before I give you my judgement, let me give you time to view the results:

I actually liked this combo a lot!!  I find it can be tricky when wearing a lot of bright shades, not to overdo it, so I’ve been pairing them with more neutral colors – and this works quite well, I think.  The contrast of Snog’s brightness makes Cho look appropriately subdued but not so boring.  Also, Cho worn on the toes looks WAY nicer than on my hands – it makes them look so clean and sophisticated.  I particularly liked how it looked with these sandals:

I’m really happy that Cho ended up being less lame then originally thought – I may never wear it on my hands again, but as a pretty pedi shade, it means that it’ll stay in my collection rather than getting the boot (I was sorely tempted before!).  Snog is just all-around fabulous, and isn’t going anywhere.  I actually think this is one of the few products in my beauty life that I would repurchase once it ran out (which is a strong possibility!).  It’s just so juicy and vibrant and shiny and awesome!  I highly recommend picking up a bottle.

What mani/pedi combo do you favour?  What is your ultimate Summer polish shade?

Mani-Pedi Combo with SpaRitual’s Aurum

I’ve sort of fell off the wagon with the Summer combo’s – I’d hoped to do one every week this season but although I’ve picked up a few new shades, I don’t have as many that you haven’t seen as I did last year!

One half of the duo I’m going to show you today IS new however, so I figured I ‘d have to take what I can get.  I picked up SpaRitual’s Aurum back in May – it’s a glowing strong yellow-gold tone that has some major sparkle capacity.  After the disappointment I had with Chanel’s Delight, which I though for SURE was going to be my go-to golden polish, I got it in my head that I had to find *something* to fill the gap.  I only have one other gold – Deb Lippmann’s Nefertiti, which just doesn’t satisfy my needs.  Aurum is much, much warmer and more of a true gold, and I hoped it would fit the bill.

Above: Two coats, indoor lighting

Below: Three coats, sunlight

Aurum is fairly sheer – notice the difference between two and three coats (the latter which I prefer to intensify the density).  However, the sheerness isn’t the only issue – I find Aurum on my skintone almost garish; it’s SUPER-blingy, and really would only be something I’d wear for a special occasion or the holidays.  I’m going to try it as a  pedi soon to see how it fares, but overall its yet another gold polish that has let me down.  However, if you like this type of shade, the formula was pretty good – applied very easily with a thinner consistency, and had no application issues at all.  And in the bottle – woo!  It’s one stunner of a shade.

The pedi shade I picked to go with Aurum was OPI’s A Roll in the Hague, a bright reddish orange.  I liked them together OK, but I think when I wear Aurum as a pedi I’m going to match it with a more vampy shade – I’m thinking Zoya’s Anja, a deep dark plummy red.  I’ll be sure to post photos!

What do you think of Aurum?  I’m wide open for suggestions on a great gold polish, so please feel free to share (taking my skintone into consideration)!

Double Feature! Summer Polish Combo(s): Contrasting Brights & Bubble-Gum Pink and a Sexy Holo

I’m doubling up on polish combos today because 1) I didn’t post my last combo (deliquent!), and 2) once September 1st arrives, Summer is essentially over for me, so this will be my last Summer Polish Combo for this year ~tear~.  I know, I know, we still have three weeks of official Summer, but I can never shake the old ‘School Year’ mentality and of course, once you’re back to school, your Summer is officially kaput.  And let’s get real, once all the fabulous Fall shades start to crop up everywhere, who can resist dropping the fabulous brights of Summer to get dark and dirty with Fall?  This girl here canNOT.  Fall is my fave season!

So, without further ado, here’s what I have for you today: Earlier in the week I was sporting two shades you’ve already seen, which just have NOT gotten enough play this Summer (due to mass amounts of yet untried polishes I still have to swatch/wear!).  I mean, it’s all well and good to be a polish collector of sorts, but if I never get an opportunity to wear the shades I love more than once, that’s just not on.  So let’s rectify that, shall we?

Presenting (again) Essie’s ‘Meet Me at Sunset’, with American Apparel’s ‘Neon Violet’:Bam!!  That’s how I felt while I was wearing this combo.  Totally in your face and contrasting but in a fun way, not a ‘she did her nails in the dark’ kind of way.  Love it!  Wish I wore this combo more often this Summer.

The second polish combo I have to show you is of two shades you haven’t seen (yay!).  I have been meaning to swatch these two for ages but there were always more pressing (read: newer) shades to show.  I finally realized I’m never going to have the time/ambition to show you all the new shades right off the bat, so I’m just going to go with that and not worry about it anymore.

Particularly in this case, I had to forgo other ‘pressing’ matters to show you this shade before the sunlight starts hiding out on me and I am unable to capture the polish in its full glory.  Of course, I’m talking about a holo – notorious for needing true sunlight in order to really showcase its beauty.  However, this holo stands out from many others in the fact that it’s a true ‘linear’ holo, and not just holo shimmer, so you can see the holographic nature in most lighting.

{Yeah, yeah, Get to the holo already!!!!!}

Ok, jeez, here it is – GOSH’s ‘Holographic’ polish:

I miraculously managed to scoop this up in an MUA swap I did a couple years ago.  In that time, I may have worn this polish three times.  I know, that’s absolutely ridiculous, because I mean – look at it! – but honestly, hear me out on why: 1) it’s HTF and therefore precious and to be used sparingly; 2) it chips very easily so can only really be worn for a specific event before needing re-application/removal; and 3) IT IS AN ABSOLUTE BITCH TO APPLY!!!!!!!

There.  I said it.  My HG (holy grail) of holo polishes is a PITA to apply and it pisses me off.  Just because it’s all pretty and stuff doesn’t mean it gets to act like a jerk and get play all the time.  Nuh-uh.  Its a serious love-hate going on.  I will never give it up, but MAN it is frustrating!  Aside from the super-easy peeling nature of the polish once it’s on, it goes on so bizarrely (because of it’s true holo nature) that it took four coats to reach this opacity without patchiness, bald spots, and pulling.  Yikes!

Now, bear in mind…this is how the polish applies when you use a base coat.  ANY base coat it seems, except Nfu-Oh’s Aqua Base, which I have heard is the way to go but of which I do not own nor am likely to since it’s another online-only-purchase-with-crazy-high-shipping-costs type of item.  So.  What’s a determined girl to do?

Skip the base coat.

Seriously, I applied this polish to one hand with base coat and one without.  While it’s not foolproof without base coat, it applies infinitely better and I only required three coats on that hand, and had minimal pulling/dragging/patchiness.  Still not ideal application, but doesn’t make me want to throw the polish bottle against the wall and have my very own all-the-time rainbow in our flat.  Super.

Moving on…the shade on my toes is the super-girly ‘Muchi Muchi’ by Essie, a name which I totally don’t get but I’m sure it means something valid.  Whatever.  I realized yesterday that as far as toe polish goes, I look good in either brights, really dark vampy colors, or pastel shades.  Anything else – murky, or in-between colors – look too close to my skin tone and make my toes look unattractive.  Anyway, so bearing that in mind, I chose ‘Muchi Muchi’ as its one of my last complimentary pedi shades that I haven’t shown you yet.

The polish itself is sugary sweet, a pale sheer pink (but not too pale) that goes with almost anything.  This is three coats, with base and top coat, and it has that slightly jelly-ish, squishy texture that looks almost pillowy.  Like foot candy!  It’s far more feminie than the shades I normally wear, and I feel a bit strange – but I do love the way it looks.  Totally pretty.  Its just a *touch* streaky and stills shows a bit of VNL (visible nail line) but it’s a sheer so its supposed to I guess.  I don’t mind it much.

And there you have it. Two for the price of one…but looking at how long this post is, I really made you work for it, huh!?  My apologies!  I have SOO many great Fall shades to show in the upcoming weeks, I had to make the last entry in the combo series count!  I hope you enjoyed it :)

What I’d really like to know is: What are your top three favorite nail polish colors?  And what kind of polish finish do you like the best (eg. shimmer, creme, frost, sheer, jelly)?  Gimme the scoop!

Bye for now!

Summer Polish Combo: Black & Lavender

As the Summer winds down (noooooo!), so do my Summer polish combos.  I almost feel like I should be moving on to the Fall shades since we’re being inundated with all the new colors, but (thankfully) we still have several weeks left of Summer weather – regardless if the nights are getting cooler! – so I’ve still got a few more combo’s to post.

Earlier this week, I mentioned that there was a bit of crappy business going on in my life.  While it all ended up OK, thankfully, in typical Latoya behavior I mirrored my mood through cosmetics, and painted my nails black.  LOL!  Dramatic, I know, but that’s how I roll :P

During the whole black-nails-as-the-new-neutral phase, I never bought into it and totally eschewed the trend.  However, I recently happened upon Orly’s glittery version ‘Goth’ and figured I’d try it out for a change – as I’ve mentioned before, I have been getting a bit bored lately with the same old shades.  To avoid being too dark and dreary, I paired ‘Goth’ with Zoya’s pretty Spring offering ‘Marley,’ – a pale, pale lavender polish. I enjoy the sparkliness of ‘Goth’ and how it’s not as drab as plain ol’ black.  However, I’m still not sure I’m into the goth look as a whole…or at least not during the warmer months.  But, it suited its purpose for me this week :)   And I do like the pairing with ‘Marley’ quite a bit.

One note about this polish – it chipped like crazy after one day!!  I haven’t had that happen with a polish is ages, so I was really disappointed in the formula for being so chip-prone.  So, something to keep in mind!

Details: Base coat of butter London Nail Foundation, two coats of Goth, one coat of Seche Vite top coat.

Size & Price: Orly polishes are 0.6 oz and Goth was $6.50CDN (specialty shades like the Cosmic FX line were $9.50).

Where to Buy: Sally Beauty salons.

What do you think of ‘Goth’?  Were you a fan of the black nail polish trend?  Are there any nail trends that just didn’t float your boat?

Happy Hump Day!

(Summer?) Polish Combo: Amethyst & Pink

I’m questioning Summer because lately here in Halifax, it’s just not feeling like it!  Rain, rain and more rain.  Totally bummer.

Anyway, earlier in the week I had on an awesome combo – China Glaze ‘Ahoy’ and Orly ‘Royal Navy’.  The brightness of the shades and their shimmer fire went perfectly together: a total ‘power combo.’  However, for whatever reason, Royal Navy was chipping on me like mad within a day, and then starting coming off in big chunks, so I put the kibosh on that pretty quickly.  I’m concerned it might be the butter London Foundation base coat I’ve been wearing, because I don’t recall that happening the last time I wore R.Navy, but I’m not entirely sure.  In the mani I’m about to show you, I have Sally Hansen’s No Chip Age Correct on one hand as a base, and butter London’s Foundation on the other.  We’ll see what happens.

Ok, details.  On my nails, I’m wearing Milani’s ‘Totally Cool,’ a purple jelly with duochrome glitter.  There’s a story behind this one: my friend gave this to me a long while back – it turned out it wasn’t the color she was hoping it to be, and she knew I was a nail polish fiend and figured I could make it work.  I tried it on, and after applying two coats and finding it to still be sheer and watered-down looking, I got turned off and put it in the ‘give-away’ pile.  However, a couple months ago through my never-ending blog trolling, I found a swatch of this polish online that blew my mind.  The post-er’s idea to layer it over another color is totally awesome too, I tried it with different variations and it comes as damn near close to Clarins 230 as I’ll ever get, so I’m loving it.

Anyway, I tried it out again, and consider me converted.  I highly suggest googling swatches of this baby, it’s really amazingly beautiful, and for around $5 at Lawtons, you can’t go wrong!!  See my own pics below:

You can get a hint of its duochrome-y nature in the bottle. This is how it looked to me when I first wore it – watery and washed out and lame.  But then…And the pièce de résistance:

My photo doesn’t quite do it justice…its really, really beautiful.  As I mentioned before, if you layered this over a burgundy base, it really brings something else to the table too – making it look like a close cousin to Clarins 230.  Awwwwwesome :)

Oh, one thing I wanted to show you was the crazy shrinking I had on one nail from the Seche Vite top coat I normally use.  I’ve been noticing this effect more and more lately and its kinda pissing me off……Yowza!  Might be time to research a new top coat!

Anyway, since I had no reason to remove ‘Ahoy’ from my toes – it didn’t act like a jerk and flake off at the drop of a hat – I kept it on because it matched ‘Totally Cool’ to a T.  Check it out:I couldn’t capture the shimmer properly in either polish, but the pinky-gold shimmer of Totally Cool really compliments the tone of Ahoy.  I tried to show the shimmer of Ahoy in the photo below (although I have featured this shade on the blog here):Not a great shot either, I’m afraid.  But trust me that Ahoy is definitely a polish to own, one of my favorites of my collection.  I’d forgotten how much I loved it until I applied it again.  It has such amazing richness and it flows on the nail so darn easily.  Love!

Totally Cool, aside from requiring four coats (you could definitely do three but I’m terribly particular), was super easy to apply and dried quickly enough that I could apply another coat soon after the one before it with absolutely no dragging.

As for the base coat wars, I’ll report back to let you know if it’s the fault of butter London or Orly for the wonky chipping.  Hopefully it’s neither and it was just an off day manicure-wise!

Has anyone else tried Totally Cool and totally fallen in love?  Does the number of polish coats turn you off a shade no matter how pretty, or will you forgive if it’s a to-die-for color?  Have you ever tried a shade and written it off, only to try it again later and change your mind?

Last night I tried sitting straight up in bed so I wouldn’t cough all night, but it’s terribly uncomfortable and I ended up getting very little sleep for a second night in a row.  I picked up a 12 hour cough suppressant and in a few minutes I’m gonna chug a bunch and strap myself to the bed so I can get some rest!!  Another sleepless night and I’m sure to snap soon :S

Summer Polish Combo: Ocean Hues

Yesterday I pulled from my stash all of the polishes I own that I consider ‘Summer’ shades, as well as all the shades that I have yet to swatch.  I try very hard to at least show one new shade each time I do a polish combination so that I’m keeping you guys interested – I don’t want to bore you with the same old.  However, I am getting down to the wire when it comes to untried colors that are also Summer-appropriate.  I know that the way nail polish is viewed now, all shades are considered seasonless, and I agree with that to a point – but I still love pastels in Spring, brights and aqua blues in the Summer, and deeper, more moody hues in the Fall and Winter.  I just do!  I find for myself, it’s less about ‘following trends’ and more about getting bored with what I have and having my interest captured by the new shades of the coming season.  Call me fickle.  I know it’s true :P

After staring at my polishes for about half an hour yesterday, trying to make a pairing I was satisfied with, I came up with a combo that says Summer, while still managing to show a shade I haven’t before.  Its a bit deeper than I’d like for the season, but I think it still works.  OPI’s ‘Yodel Me on My Cell’ (on my fingers) was the only polish I picked up from the Swiss Collection this past Winter.  I tend to only choose a shade or two from each collection rather than the whole thing, because I still have an issue with amassing too many ‘dupes’ (or ‘near dupes’) in my collection – I haven’t yet gotten to the point where a shade that’s a hair different than another is considered totally different and therefore I must buy.  I am forever waging the war against my intensely consumerist nature, and my aversion to having too much choice – it stresses me out!

Anyway, I found the other shades in this collection were either too close to what I already owned, or just not flattering for my skin tone.  And I’m also not huge into reds, of which there were 4 or 5 in this collection as I recall.  I somewhat regret not picking up ‘Diva of Geneva’ because I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about it, but oh well (*Edit: Picked it up today when I happened to find it at a local salon :)   Swatches to come).

YMOMC seemed like an amazing shade when I bought it.  The depth of color in this shimmering aquamarine shade is phenomenal.  Actually, I think DoG is probably the berry pink counterpart to YMOMC – glorious.  That ‘lit from within’ glow that seems to be the catchphrase for these types of polishes. However, after wearing it a few times this Winter, somewhere along the line my love affair abruptly ended.  For whatever reason, it just wasn’t doing it for me anymore.  It seemed boring, and darker than I liked.  So I put it aside, and even put it up on Makeupalley for swap.I hoped this time around maybe my feelings had changed.  I wanted to give it another chance to ‘wow’ me.  Unfortunately, I’m still left unimpressed – something about this color on me seems sooo boring!  I think I dislike middle of the road shades – either be super bright, or very deep, or shimmery, or holo, or…something.  It looks nice enough but I feel like changing it the instant I put it on, it just doesn’t do it for me.The shade on my toes requires less lead-in than YMOMC, as you’ve seen it before – MAC’s Mischevious Mint from Spring’s ‘Quite Cute’ collection.  Still with the same application issues – a bit thick and draggy – but in the end applies fine and I’m still a fan of the color.  Looks great against tanned skin, I think!  And quite complimentary to the aqua hues of my mani, though being ‘Mint’ I guess it’s actually considered a green.  Regardless, I like the pairing.

Details: Manicure – One coat of butter London’s Nail Foundation, three coats of YMOMC, one coat of Seche Vite.  Pedicure – One coat of Sally Hansen Age Correct No Chip Base/Top Coat, two coats of Mischevious Mint, one coat Sally Hansen Insta-Dry Top Coat.

Size & Price:  OPI nail lacquers are 0.5 oz and typically retail for around $9.95CDN.   MAC nail polish are 0.34 oz and retail for $15.00CDN.

Where to Buy: YMOMC is Limited Edition, but I’ve still seen it being sold online and at some salons around Canada/US  (Chatters Salon has one of the larger collections of OPI I’ve seen).  MAC nail polish can be purchased at MAC stores across Canada (here in Halifax, that’s either at The Bay Dartmouth, or Halifax Shopping Centre), or online at Maccosmetics.com. This particular shade is also Limited Edition.

Since I’m struggling a bit with coming up with shade combinations, I’d love to hear your ideas for my next combo!!!  If there’s anything you’d like to see, or a particular combination you know looks great, be sure to give your suggestions in the comments – I’d love to hear ‘em!

What are your thoughts on YMOMC?  Do you agree that it’s somewhat lackluster?  Or are these kinds of shades just your cup of tea?

Ciao for now, everyone!

Summer Polish Combo (They Just Keep Comin’!): Neon & Nude

This’ll be a quickie post as I should head to bed soon – I have another wedding tomorrow in the Valley I have to head to early in the AM.  This will be the 5th wedding I’ve done the makeup for, 4th one I’ve attended since the end of June…phew!  They’ve all been SO much fun, but I’m glad to have them almost all behind me.  It’s been a really, really busy Summer so far.

Again, this combo was done in preparation for my wedding attire tomorrow – a navy blue one-shoulder body skimming dress I got on sale at Jacob at Christmastime but have not yet worn.  I didn’t want to go too ‘standard’ since the dress isn’t too crazy, but I wanted to still look classy – just with an edge.  I wandered into American Apparel today and picked up one of their neon polishes, a pretty magenta shade called ‘Neon Violet.’  I used to have an almost identical shade from Zoya back in the day called ‘Charisma,’ which was a matte and it chipped within hours.  Drove me nuts – I swapped it away last year.  This actually has a satin finish rather than glossy, so it looks similar in that way too.

Anyway, enough chat :P   Here’s ‘Neon Violet’ paired with OPI’s ‘San Tan-tonio’ from their Texas Collection:The second shot is more accurate, with the neon being slightly more pink in person.

Here’s a few pics of the polishes on their own:

If you notice a lil twist to San Tan., you win a prize! (No, not really.  But good eye! :) )  I added a coat of CND’s ‘Copper Shimmer’ on top to give it a bit of a kick.  I have not NOT used this top coat nearly enough (or…at all.  This might be the first time) and it’s really beautiful.  As I’ve mentioned before though, typically I’m more into cremes so that’s a contributing factor.

Details:  One coat of butter London Nail Foundation and two coats of polish for both mani & pedi.  Additional one coat of Copper Shimmer over mani, and one coat of Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat over both mani & pedi.

Size & Price:  American Apparel polishes are 0.5 oz and retail for $7.50 CDN a bottle (3 for $18).  OPI polish are also 0.5 oz and ranges from $9-14 CDN.  CND polish (Effects line) is 0.33 oz and are about $14 CDN.

Where to Buy:  A. Apparel polishes can be found at – surprise! – A. Apparel stores worldwide.  OPI polish is EVERYWHERE…lol in Halifax at least you can find the best selection at Chatters Salons.  CND polishes can be a be tricky to find – your best bet in Halifax is to order them from spaboutique.ca.

I’m enjoying this pairing a lot (though I just put it on about 30 minutes ago!).  I really like ‘Neon Violet’ and I think it’s a good transitional shade from season to season – not so neon that it’s restricted to just Summer.  Application for N.Violet was pretty great – two coats easily applied, though you could almost get away with one, which is typical for A.Apparel polishes.  I’ve previously discussed my feelings on San Tan here.   ‘Copper Shimmer’ is my only CND polish, but if it’s any indication, they have an absolutely fabulous formula – perfect thickness and a dream to apply.

How do you feel about top coats that change the look of your polish?  And neon polish – awesome or too much of an 80′s throwback?

I have to get up in 6 hours and I need my beauty rest, so that’s it for now.  I hope all is well for everyone, have a great weekend!!!

Summer Polish Combo: Lilac and Navy

On paper, and even just looking at the combination via the bottles, this sounds like it would be a complimentary pair.  However, now that I’m looking at it on my nails, I’m not so sure I completely hit the mark.  The lilac shade is a bit greyed out and somehow looks dull against the navy holo (that’s right, I said HOLO :) ).  Or it could be my eyes and this horrid fluorescent lighting I’m in right now at work.  Who knows?Anyway, what you want to know is what shades I’m talking about!  Well let me just tell you then.  On my tips I’m wearing a-england’s ‘Tristam’ – a gem of a polish, a dusty navy blue holo.  In regular lighting, the holo is not readily apparent – it looks more like fine silverish shimmer, although at some angles you can see the rainbow effect slightly.  It’s been cloudy the past couple days but as soon as the sun comes out I’ll update with pics to show the holo effect.*Updated with holo shots!*The polish applied OK – just OK to me, because there was a bit of patchiness in the first application. As well, the formula is a touch thicker than I would have liked, but it leveled itself out after two coats, so neither issue was really a problem in the end.On my toes, I’m wearing RBL’s Insouciant; this is only the second time I’ve worn this shade since debuting it to you back in March.  While I found it looked nice in swatches, in person it washed me out due to the greyish, cool nature of the polish.  It looks considerably better on me now that I’m tanned, but at the same time, it doesn’t make me think of Summer at all.  So hence the limited number of wears.

Details:

Despite the small issues with the a-england polish, I’m still really pleased with the shade.  I also picked up ‘Lady of the Lake’ so I’ll have to swatch that for you soon.  Even if you’re not a fan of holos, I think both shades are a great find.  As for Insouciant, I’m not sure how I feel about it.  I probably should put it up for swap, as I’ve barely worn it and I’m not likely to, but it’s my first and only (so far) RBL polish, so we’ll see.  Maybe once I pick up a few more – Piu Mosso from the Fall collection looks amazing! – then I’ll be able to part with it easier.

Do you have any polishes you hang on to even though you know you shouldn’t?  Do you tend to be less likely to give up shades [from brands] that are popular just because, or are you able to let go when you know it just doesn’t suit you?

Does anyone else feel like July didn’t even happen?  I can’t believe it’s almost over!  I’m going to be taking night classes come Fall, so I have to make August count!

Thanks for reading! :)
