New favourite eyeshadow: Make Up For Ever Aqua Matic in ME-50

This probably sounds silly, but sometimes I don’t like getting press samples. I adhere a lot to the ‘if you can’t say something nice, don’t say it at all‘ philosophy, and when I receive an opportunity to review something I’m unsure I’ll like, I almost want to decline the offer altogether (and sometimes I do!). I feel especially conflicted when a brand I like comes out with a product that receives mixed-reviews, as my loyalty runs deep. I was recently in just that situation when I had a chance to try out the new Make Up For Ever Aqua Matic eye shadow sticks ($25CAD) – Christine at Temptalia was the first blog through which I read reviews about the product, and on the whole they were not great. Make Up For Ever is one of my favourite brands (and it doesn’t hurt that their PR people are lovely!) and I wasn’t keen on writing a subpar review against them – I know not all products will be winners, but my softy heart just feels bad in instances like that, and I am far too honest and up-front to lie or mar the truth.

MUFE Aqua Matic ME-50

Thankfully (and long-winded intro aside!), once I received the press sample of one of the Aqua Matic shadows, in ME-50, not only did I not have to write a crappy review, but turns out this shadow is genuinely one of my absolute favourites of all time!!!!! <— 4 exclamation points are needed to express just how much I love this shadow!

MUFE Aqua Matic ME-50Pretty multi-faceted shimmer :)

First of all, there is the colour – on me, this ‘metallic golden taupe’ is the perfect bronze-y neutral tone on my skin, which sometimes is hard to achieve, as shades like this tend to be too ashy, too light, or too brown to be considered neutral. It has the most amazing sparkling quality to it that gives it a little bit something more, yet it’s not over the top or unwearable for day in the least. For those of you who regularly love wearing bold lips like I do, a shade like this is invaluable – sometimes I don’t want to leave my eyes bare, but I don’t want my shadow to compete in any way with my lip colour. This fits the bill perfectly.

Secondly, the wear time on this bad boy is excellent – we’ve been having a heat wave the past week or so here (not complaining! About damn time!) and this resists fading and creasing like nobody’s business. This could be in part to the fact that the colour melds with my skin tone so well, I don’t notice any fading – but upon close inspection after a full day’s wear, it still seems pretty intact to me and that gorgeous sparkle is still in effect.

Lastly, though I know for some the application of these is a bit tricky – they do set rather quickly – I actually don’t mind it, again due to the subtle shade on my skin tone, but also because it’s such a one-and-done shade that not a lot of blending is required. I just ensure that I apply it first to the lid and blend a bit, then add a bit more in my crease separately so I have enough time to buff it out with my finger. I really didn’t even notice it was a bit more difficult to blend until I really started paying attention – with a shade this wonderful, I really don’t care if it’s a bit more work – it’s just so damn FABULOUS!

MUFE Aqua Matic ME-50 & Marc Jacobs Dizzy Spell

In the photo above, I’m wearing it paired with Marc Jacobs Lovemarc Lip Gel in Dizzy Spell, a soft peachy nude that I quite like with my skin tone (though it does pick up on any flakes on the lips if you aren’t careful). It’s the only bit of makeup I’ve bought from his line so far.

MUFE Aqua Matic ME-50 & Marc Jacobs Dizzy Spell

As you can see, the effect of the shadow is subtle, but IRL trust me when I say that its nowhere near boring. For me, the shade and longevity combined with the ease of use (note it’s a twist-up pencil, that has a sharpener on the other end for precision) make this a win-win-WIN product! If this were a limited edition product I would buy backups upon backups – which is UNHEARD of in my world! All this to say: don’t let a review necessarily sway you from trying a product that you’re curious about – sometimes you’ll have an entirely different experience! And in this case, Christine didn’t actually review this particular shade, either ;)

Have you tried the new Aqua Matic pencils? How do you feel about giving poor reviews on a product?

Swatching Is Rough (AKA My Eyeshadow Collection)

Eyeshadow Collection (3)

I was going to leave my eyeshadow collection ’till last to swatch in my ‘find the gaps’ series of posts, but the superstorm (which…is kind of lackluster – yea, there’s lots of snow, but I want some action, darn it!) seemed like the perfect time to just get ‘er done – so I did!  Oh man…for those of you who have larger collections than mine, I feel sorry for you if you attempt to do this – it is a BIG EFFING ORDEAL.  I started last night and got just over halfway through before both (!) arms had had enough.  I continued today and after needing to re-swatch several shade categories to get them *just right*, my left arm is just burning (as you’ll notice in the photos – red spots galore!).  So: enough.  I’m ready to rock ‘n roll.  Now – let’s get into ‘er!

Eyeshadow Collection (4)

…So.  To be honest, when I started swatching all my makeup, I was originally just trying to find a way to justify new purchases – if it could be considered a shade I didn’t already own, then I would feel free to go for it.  However, now I’ve discovered that being so fully aware of what I own, has made me really excited to play with my current collection, instead of seeking out new products.  I especially noticed this with this eyeshadow post – there are so truly fabulous shades in there!  While there are still of course colors I’d like to pick up to fill the gaps (namely – a lilac and a skintone [MY skintone, to clarify] shade, among a couple others), overall I’m WELL aware I have a ton of shades to rock out and don’t really *need* anything else at the moment.  I did notice I have a lot less color than I imagined, but that’s actually OK because I don’t tend to wear it a ton and try to avoid buying a lot of it only for it to go unused.  I think my stash is fairly representative of the kind of makeup I wear day to day!  So SCORE for being logical in my purchases :)

Eyeshadow Collection

I am kinda worn out from the work necessary to do this post, so I’m done now LOL.  But – I have questions for you!

Do you see any gaps that I could fill?  What shades make up the bulk of your eyeshadow collection?? Also – anyone bother to count how many shades I have?  I’m too tired now to bother LOL

Cross One Off My Beautiful-Makeup-I-MUST-Own List: Le Metier de Beaute’s Corinthian

It’s all going downhill from here.  There is just no way I can go back to buying plain ‘ol, now that I’ve delved into the world of serious luxury.  I’m calling it here and now, my friends: The desire only increases as time wears on.  I started, as many did, with MAC….moved my way into bigger and better brands like Urban Decay and Benefit…then NARS and Bobbi Brown…then slowly entered the world of Chanel… and now here I am.  Shopping for makeup in other countries because I wanna, I gotta have it!  It’s not only about a price point…it’s just that as you get exposed to more and more brands, the more you want to try.  And I specifically want to try the best.  Which brings me to my very ~precious~ purchase du jour – Le Metier de Beaute’s Corinthian eyeshadow.I have to congratulate myself here for a minute, because I ordered Corinthian based on swatches I saw online, not realizing that this particular shade is one of the brand’s most loved and hardest to keep in stock.  So I clearly have good taste :P

I have been itching to try something from Le Metier for about a year now, but just couldn’t bring myself to pay not only a higher price tag, but also the shipping that would go along with it.  Additionally, I believe the last time I tried to buy something from the brand, it was restricted from delivery to Canada.  Thankfully, the stars aligned for me a few weeks ago when Neiman Marcus had a free shipping code (that was actually applicable to us North of the border) and I realized that Le Metier would indeed ship to me.  I immediately scoured the internet to figure out what purchase(s) I wanted to make, and decided upon Corinthian after seeing a variety of lovely swatches which showcased its beautiful bronze/taupe/silver/purple tones. Last week my ~precious~ made its way into my greedy hands, and I immediately dove right in before even taking any pictures for the blog (sacrilege, I know).  Thankfully, because this shadow is ridiculously butter smooth and soft, you can’t even really tell it’s been touched (must be the quadruple-milled aspect *seriously*).

Artificial lightNatural light

The pigmentation of this shadow is really amazing – it hardly seems like it’s picking up on your brush, and yet you apply it and there it is – complete with a gorgeous sheen that borders on shimmer but never quite gets that obvious.  I know that Le Metier’s philosophy is one of layering – and I can see how these shadows would achieve that.  Somehow it leaves a veil of color that shows up perfectly on skin, without being heavy but not lacking in pigmentation in the least.  I found wear time to be good – nothing above average but good enough (6-8 hours before any fading) that I felt satisfied in the cost (which by the way is approx. $30CAD).

Without flashWithout flashWith flashWith flash

The shade of Corinthian is also (obviously) quite striking – a mix of pale bronze and taupe with hints of purple and silver sheen depending on the light.  I know taupe is a BIG DEAL shade in the beauty community, but I’m getting on the bandwagon late so forgive my ignorance of how versatile and fabulous it is.  This particular shade would work for every single skintone I think, pulling out whatever undertone was in the wearer and accomodating to it.  I compared it to my bare Escentual’s Meteorite, and while they’re quite similar actually, Corinthian has a touch more bronze and wears much more naturally, whereas Meteorite is highly metallic.  I feel justified in owning both (of course I do).

Top: Meteorite; Bottom: Corinthian (Artificial light)Top: Meteorite; Bottom: Corinthian (Natural light)

Needless to say, my first foray into Le Metier products certainly didn’t easy my desires – if anything, I’m just biding my time till I order some more!  Thankfully, the Lip Cremes and Lip Glosses contain Lanolin, which I’m allergic to, so I’m putting those right out of my head now.  However, the rest of the line is fair game, my friends ;)

What do you think of Corinthian?  Are you a slave to taupe as well?  Have to tried Le Metier de Beaute products before?  Which are your favorites?
