Best Bang for Your Buck Series: Bronzers

Welcome to the ‘Bang for Your Buck’ series!  Each week for the next few months, I’m going to tackle certain types of beauty products, and list the offerings from popular department store brands and their sizes vs. costs.  At a glance, you’ll be able to see which items are most cost effective in that category, and get a better idea if your money is being well spent, or if you’re being, well – a little ripped off!  Also, if you’re hedging on picking up a certain product because of the cost, this will give you an idea of the true value of the product and if it’s worth your hard earned cash.

Many of the sizes and dollar values of products are taken from online websites; please let me know if anything is listed incorrectly and I’ll be sure to fix it!  Also, for products which we don’t have here in Atlantic Canada, or for items that are more difficult to find overall, I’ll note in green where they’re located for your reference – though I tried to mostly include products relatively accessible as a whole.

**I’m posting this early this week as I hope to have a fun, Paddy’s Day-themed post for tomorrow – stay tuned!! 🙂

Week Four: Bronzers

Thought I know many people wear bronzer throughout the year, I find Spring to be the time when bronzers are really capitalized upon, as everyone scrambles to get a bit of color after a long Winter, and the anticipation of  the approaching Summer sunshine builds daily.  Therefore, I thought it was a perfect time to introduce a slew of suggestions for popular products that impart a great, sunkissed glow.

I could be missing something, but it seems like there are really only a handful of bronzers on the market that are truly well-known; I found I had to actually look up what other brands had to offer in the way of bronzers, even for top names in the biz.  Whether that means that the more commonly heard products are as such because they truly are the creme de la creme, I do not know.   Since I don’t really *need* a bronzer ~cough~ I’m brown ~cough~ it’s entirely possible I’m just unaware because it’s not on my radar.  In any case, after doing the research for this post, I’m terribly curious to take a closer look at many of them – I’m sure I could always use a little extra sun-kissing 😉

Best Value:
Estee Lauder ($54.05 / oz)

Worst Value:
Illamasqua ($228.57 / oz)

Most Product:
Estee Lauder (0.74oz)

Least Product:
Illamasqua (0.14oz)

Best Picks (+0.35oz of product and $40 or less):
MAC (0.35oz for $28)
Cover FX (0.4oz for $28)
Lancome (0.45oz for $35)
Too Faced (0.35oz for $36)
Estee Lauder (0.74oz for $40)

Worthy Splurges (+0.35oz of product and more than $40):
LORAC (0.367oz for $42)
Dior (0.42oz for $45)
Guerlain (0.35oz for $56)
Chanel (0.38oz for $56)
Yves Saint Laurent (0.35oz for $60)

So – the Lauder bronzer is HUGE!!!  Wowza, that thing’ll last forever!  And how about the itty-bitty nature of the Illmasqua one – 0.14oz, for a DUO no less…shabby deal.  You can bet I won’t be picking that one up!  For me, aside from the Bobbi Brown and the Guerlain bronzers, the rest don’t interest me at all.  I have a MAC bronzer I quite like, and I’m waiting on NARS Casino via swap, so for now I’m good!  ~But of COURSE I am – I’m BROWN!~ 😉

Do you have a favorite bronzer?  Is it on the list above?  What lines am I sorely missing?

Bronzers!! Bronzers are so tricky for me, so when I do find one I like I don’t mind the price so much. My favourites are my Edward Bess, Dior Aurora and Chantecaille St. Barth’s. Those three I can wear without fear of looking ORANGE.
I hope Casino works for you!

I hope so too, if I ever get it! My MUA’er has gone MIA :S

I’ve seen both the E.Bess and Dior’s on you and they are STELLAR for your complexion so don’t ever change! LOL. I think bronzers are tricky period, so the *trick* is to try a bunch till you find a brand that has the right kind of shading for your skin type – some people probably need more golden tones, others more bronze etc. So you’re lucky you found your best fit’s!

I don’t know… since I’m never going to finish a bronzer, maybe next time I should get the tiny one? LOL

I kind of regret not picking up an Estee Lauder star bronzer from last summer. It’s soooo goddamn pretty. Bronzer should be one of those things picked for practicality but it’s starting to get impossible!!!

Hahaha…probably a good idea, Liz 😛 I often think I should do that with a lot of products!

I don’t think I’ve given Estee’s bronzer a good look before…and I’m scared to now, I don’t need any more!! What they heck do I need one for at all? There is no good reason to own more than say, two or three bronzers at most (maybe one for Winter, Summer, and a shimmery one?). Like everything else lately, I went from 2 to 5 in a matter of a month or so. WTF!?!

Wow….talk about a breakdown! I’m with Liz – there’s no way I’m ever going to finish any of the bronzers I’ve got lying around here, that’s for sure – and yet, I continue to buy (and lust) after more! Something about being able to literally “buy a tan in an elegant compact” just seems to work for me…as weird as that sounds! Plus, they make them just so darn pretty, who in their right mind can resist?!!!!!

    • #6 by Latoya on March 19, 2012 - 9:37 pm

I think you’ve got something there Eugenia, ‘tan in a compact’, hmmm. I just never seem to understand why I feel the need to own one, let alone multiple, for obvious reasons, but this makes sense to me! Love that smart ol’ noggin on yours my dear 🙂

I don’t actually know how to use a bronzer the way it should be used – all over face for a glow. I just use it like blush, LOL. I think if I used it as an all over face powder I might be able to use one up, but then, I don’t actually go for the bronzed look too often. ._.

    • #8 by Latoya on March 20, 2012 - 5:53 pm

I don’t normally go for the bronzed look often either Larie, which is why my sudden hoarding of them is bizarre lol. Although, today I wore bronzer only just because I’m trying to figure it out, and I looked pretty good!! I’m going to try out the bronzed look for the next while (our weather is unseasonably hot right now so I’m working with that) and see how it goes. I think I’m slowly learning, but it’s a process, I tell ya!

...And what do you have to say about all this?? Dish! :)
