I’ve been meaning to write this post for a good month now, but with my busy schedule and the infrequent appearance of the sun, it just hasn’t come together! However, after having a string of gorgeous hot, sunny days here in Hali (and by hot I mean like August weather…SO weird), I’ve managed to simultaneously slow wayyy down for a change – spending the last three days outside from dawn till dusk – and take a few shots for the blog in all the lovely sunshine. SCORE.
I find that once the sun comes out, I get so tempted to play even more with makeup, trying out bold colors for eyes, lips and cheeks. However, when you’re spending entire days outside, I don’t feel comfortable wearing such noticeable makeup, as it somehow feels like I’m resisting the natural, easy-going vibe that comes with warm weather. Due to this little mini-war I have in my head, I tend to compromise by opting instead for shimmering, golden tones that allow me to feel ‘summery’ while staying relatively low-key. Two products that work well toward that end are Make Up For Ever’s Aqua Eyes eyeliner in Gold 9L ($23CAD), a metallic yellow, and Lab Shine Star Collection lipgloss in S0 ($22CAD), a pearly nude.
In the heat of summer, one of the first things to drop off my makeup routine is eyeshadow. Though I generally don’t tend to experience excessive creasing, I find that opting for liner only is a quick, easy, and long-lasting way to ensure I look good without looking like I tried too hard. Gold 9L is a bright metallic true yellow – it doesn’t contain any orange leanings, so it would be a great shade for cooler skintones or for a warmer skintone looking for contrast. Its the perfect kind of shade to wear on the inner corners of your eyes to brighten them up – if I’m in a rush, or looking for a seriously minimalist look, I’ll opt to wear it this way with very little else.
However, if I want to go full-on with this shade, with my neutral skintone it can look a bit stark. To remedy this, I first apply black liner to my top lashes to define, before tracing the gold above the liner and into my inner corners – then finally add a touch of a sheer, satiny yellow shadow to blend out the gold liner. Oh, and lots of mascara 🙂
As you can see, it’s great for adding a little lightness and brightness to the eye without being too dance-y (aka that inner highlight thing we do when we’re going out on the town) so it’s ideal for day.
Make Up For Ever’s Lab Shine Star Collection lipgloss in S0 is another excellent product that gives a little something extra without being too much under the bright rays of summer sun. I’ve had another shade in this gloss before and I really like it – its a bit thick so it has good longevity, but it’s not sticky at all and is very smooth and comfortable to wear.
S0 is a shimmering pale sheer beige that mutes the lipcolor only slightly, which makes it very wearable with a variety of looks. The non-glittery finish makes it great for day, but it has enough glimmer that it can hold its own against flashier night looks – and it’s translucency makes it ideal for layering.
Though my natural inclination is to go big and bold in my makeup choices for the most part, I do like to have more subtle, toned down items in my arsenal to turn to if I’m spending the day outside or looking to go low-key – or to compliment a more in-your-face eye or lip look! While at first glance, these two products might seem too tame for some, I have found myself reaching for them more often than I expected to polish off my summer beauty routine and keep things as fuss-free as possible – all the better to spend every moment I can out in that (rare) sunshine!
Do you lighten up in the warmer months?

So, remember this post? Yea, you know – the mega-sad one. Well, just so you know: ever since writing that post and opening up about my current situation, things have much improved! We all have heard that talking about things always makes you feel better, but we don’t always put it into practice. Let this be a lessons learned for everyone (including myself): IT REALLY DOES MAKE YOU FEEL BETTER. I think why it helps is that you feel like you’re sort of being pro-active, and doing something for good yourself, even if you’re not actually putting a solution into action. Once I did that, it was easier to start doing other constructive things to get back to my usual perky self. I started doing kick-ass yoga (aka ashtanga yoga) to compliment my half-marathon training, and I feel stronger and more fit than ever. I had my friends over for dinner and brunch this past month, and felt a little less disconnected that before. And this past week, I made a connection with another gal who needs a place to stay, and soon I might just have a roommate, which would help my financial situation immensely. Things are most certainly looking up, and I just wanted to give you a little update and also to thank each and every one of you who were so fantastically supportive after I wrote that post – you gave me such comfort and the courage to then open up to my friends and family, and since have felt infinitely better. So THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for being the wonderful people you are and for being so kind and caring. Though I haven’t met most of you in person I feel very fortunate to call many of you friends 😀
Particularly amazing friend-cheer from the wonderful Sarah of Beauty and the Baked Goods…aside from the very fact that she SENT me a care package, the sweet hat card and note plus hilarious envelope quips made me laugh out loud. BEST. THERAPY. EVER.
Now, let me share some other goodness with you! MAC has put out a collection this year (one of the million) called Year of the Snake, which contains a handful of repromoted shades with snazzy box packaging and beautiful snake-like embossing on the actual product, and only available for purchase online. The moment I saw the peachy-golden fantabulousness of the Beauty Powder in Shell Pearl (which I hear has been repromoted up the wazoo….how did I miss it before?) on Circuits of Fever, I was 100% madly, desperately in love. I went to buy it on the site, only to find that it had been sold out, to my utter disappointment. Denise assured me that often things will come back in stock after a time, and to keep checking back every few days. So, like a makeup obsessed crazy person, I checked the site constantly for a week, each time crossing my fingers and toes that it had come available again. No such luck.
Of COURSE, as things go, after a few weeks of giving up online shopping for Lent, I happened to be casually browsing the site and came across the powder, which was IN STOCK. Let this be an indication of how much I wanted to own this powder, that I broke my Lent promise (which I have NEVER done) and snapped up the powder in seconds flat. My love was that serious.
And do I feel guilty? HECK NO. This is why:
It’s sooo pretty you guys!! I have purchased a few items over the past year with pretty designs and such, but this one really gets me goin’. It’s just SEXY. Love, love, love it.
I find the color to lean slightly pink and reads more coral than peach, but who are we kidding – coral is the SHIT! No complaints here. The golden shimmers throughout are really beautiful, and NOT an overspray.
As you can see from the swatches (first diffused, then layered), when worn it’s more of a golden highlight versus getting any serious pinky/peachy/coral hue showing. Fair skins could probably wear this as a subtle blush though I think, as it does give even my darker skin the barest hint of color.
Comparing this to the other highlighters I showed you earlier this week, I would say that this does sparkle a bit in the sunlight, but it’s subtle and manageable in my opinion. There is something about this powder I just ADORE. I find it reminds me of a warmer version of Chanel’s Poudre Signee – it really illuminates my face in a beautiful way while remaining somewhat elusive. I can see why MAC has released and re-released this powder several times over – it’s just so gorgeous! To look at as well as to use. I even prefer this design over the Chanel (sacrilege, I know).
Currently this powder is sold out on the US site but in-stock on the Canadian one (lucky us!). I don’t know how long the collection will be available, but I would suggest if you’re interested in this powder to get it sooner rather than later – I know they’ll likely release it again (and again) in the future, but this design is not to be missed. I even plan on keeping the box it came in too, that is BY FAR the best packaging I’ve seen to date.
Oh yea, FYI – the Beauty Powder retails for $29CAD.
Have you come across any beauty products that have rocked your world lately?
I was going to leave my eyeshadow collection ’till last to swatch in my ‘find the gaps’ series of posts, but the superstorm (which…is kind of lackluster – yea, there’s lots of snow, but I want some action, darn it!) seemed like the perfect time to just get ‘er done – so I did! Oh man…for those of you who have larger collections than mine, I feel sorry for you if you attempt to do this – it is a BIG EFFING ORDEAL. I started last night and got just over halfway through before both (!) arms had had enough. I continued today and after needing to re-swatch several shade categories to get them *just right*, my left arm is just burning (as you’ll notice in the photos – red spots galore!). So: enough. I’m ready to rock ‘n roll. Now – let’s get into ‘er!

Did you make it??
…So. To be honest, when I started swatching all my makeup, I was originally just trying to find a way to justify new purchases – if it could be considered a shade I didn’t already own, then I would feel free to go for it. However, now I’ve discovered that being so fully aware of what I own, has made me really excited to play with my current collection, instead of seeking out new products. I especially noticed this with this eyeshadow post – there are so truly fabulous shades in there! While there are still of course colors I’d like to pick up to fill the gaps (namely – a lilac and a skintone [MY skintone, to clarify] shade, among a couple others), overall I’m WELL aware I have a ton of shades to rock out and don’t really *need* anything else at the moment. I did notice I have a lot less color than I imagined, but that’s actually OK because I don’t tend to wear it a ton and try to avoid buying a lot of it only for it to go unused. I think my stash is fairly representative of the kind of makeup I wear day to day! So SCORE for being logical in my purchases 🙂
I am kinda worn out from the work necessary to do this post, so I’m done now LOL. But – I have questions for you!
Do you see any gaps that I could fill? What shades make up the bulk of your eyeshadow collection?? Also – anyone bother to count how many shades I have? I’m too tired now to bother LOL
I don’t think there’s a soul on Earth who doesn’t like to get mail (when it’s the non-$$-owing kind). I personally love to get mail (even bank statements!), and am sure to send it out as much as I can – Christmastime gets all kinds of crazy. The absolute best/worst kind of mail is the kind that results from online shopping: awesome because you got a real treat delivered to your door! – but a little scary because it can get out of hand, quickfast. I haven’t yet reached the *yikes!* stage, but I DO have to hold myself back quite frequently.
Lately I’ve been indulging both my love of beauty and my love of mail by engaging in a whole bunch of swaps, ticking things off my lemmings list methodically which is super-terrif. However, before I got oh-so-wise, I did do a wee bit of other purchasing:
The Too Faced bronzer and the NARS eyeliner were swap items, but the ELLIS FAAS ELLIS FAAS ELLIS FAAS (just making sure you’re paying attention – I bought ELLIS FAAS!) product I purchased last month. ELLIS FAAS revamped their website in July and to celebrate they were offering free shipping till the end of the month, so I had to get on that! The brand was another on my “12 Brands to Try” list, so I’m pretty stoked. I won’t say any more about the mystery product, but keep your eyes peeled for a review and FOTD very soon! 🙂
Now, I haven’t forgotten that there’s also an a-England polish kicking around there too – one more shade to add to my collection! The brand was also having a promotion last month where the Mythicals collection was all half off, and when I noted one day that I didn’t own a black polish, my smart lady-friends Larie and Eugenia both recommended Camelot as a must-have.
Camelot is an inky, rich black that doesn’t have any other leanings – it’s a true, straightforward black, with no funny business. The formula is lovely, with the perfect consistency, and it’s fairly shiny on it’s own (here its shown with one coat and no top coat), but I think with two coats and a top coat it would simply gleam. However, it’s unlikely I’ll ever wear this as is, truth be told. I think shades like this are better left to the more fair-skinned of the world, as the contrast between light and dark is much more pronounced, and in my eyes, prettier. But there are several polish shades I own that could benefit from a black base coat, so I figured it was kind of a staple requirement in my stash.
…Then I got an idea. An awful idea.
This gal got a wonderful, *awful* idea!
Remember that garish gold polish I showed you a few weeks ago? The SpaRitual one that just about blinded you with it’s bling? Well, I think I might have found a way to make it work…
BAM! KAPOW! OH SNAP! Yes, my friends, I discovered a fabulous way to wear Aurum without wanting to take it off instantly! In fact, I kinda want to wear this look a whole lot!! And it’s so funny….today I decided that I wanted to get my hands on butter London’s Wallis – yep, I was gonna have it – and now I think I can hold off (for a while, at least). I know that it’s not a dupe by any means, but the idea of it is so similar that I can be satisfied on that front I think! I’m so pleased that I will be able to wear Aurum, as I can’t stand buying things that end up being all wrong. The black base totally chills out the shade (this is just one coat over Camelot) and grounds it so it’s not so aggressively sparkly and yellow-toned, and almost makes it look a little edgy. Love love love.
So all in all I had a great day today!! I have another handful of swaps on the way (yea, I’ve been busy), and a lot of pretty stuff to show you, so I have to get on it! I hope everyone is enjoying the last weeks of summer, it’s been a fantastic one here (can you believe, that our ‘norm’ now is sun!?), so I’m reluctant to see it go, but I am pretty excited for fall makeup shades! And this combo of Aurum and Camelot will totally fit in, don’t you think??
